My Dad's just ordered a Samsung D600e with Orange, on a monthly
contract. I already have have a Samsung D500 on PAYG.
I have 2 questions. Firstly, can I just swap SIM cards so I get the
better phone? I'm sure I can, but as one is PAYG and one not, I'm not
100% sure. I'm 99% sure it would be ok though.
Secondly - and this is the thing I'm really not sure about - When do I
change the SIM card? After registering or before? The reason I'm asking
that is because when I registered mine with Orange last month, they
wanted the IMEI number that is written on the phone itself. So if I was
to swap SIM cards first, could my Dad still register the phone/SIM card
using my old phone, and give the same IMEI number? Wouldn't their
records flag that and they'd ask questions? So would it be best for him
to register it normally and then we swam SIMs?
Thank for any help,
Geoff.

I am not 100% sure of Orange's standpoint on this, but I registered a
new Orange SIM and then asked if I could put it in another Orange phone
and they said yes. I told 'em my wife doesn't like the PDA type phone
and was happy with her k700i.
AFAIK, the IMEI is so they can register the SIM to that phone - I am
guessing on the premise that most folks only have one phone. That way it
can barred. I don't forsee it being a problem, but why not just phone
Orange CS on 150 (contract). Press 2 then 4 for options so you can speak
to a rep.

Thanks for that. Yeah I guess it would make sense to just call and ask
Orange, but I can't help feeling they'd get funny about it for some
unknown reason though and not tell me the actual truth. I think I'll do
what JB said and get the new one registered first, then swap SIMS. After
all, what's the worst that could happen?
Cheers,
Geoff.

Yes, as long as your dad agrees!

Register the PAYG SIM with the new phone, and then swap SIMs. The only
possible complication I can think of is if you pay (through the nose!) for
Orange Care, the records will get screwed up as to which handset is covered
for which number.

It's ok, he does agree. He's getting it free and isn't too bothered
which one he has, so he may as well get one that I particularly want and
he can have my old (but still good) phone. It's the contract SIM that's
the new one because my PAYG SIM is already registered, but I take the
point. Neither of us have Orange Care, so there should be no problem.
Thanks very much TT, I'm glad everyone who's replied says the same thing
so I'm confident it'll be ok.

Re: Exchanging SIM cards between PAYG and Contract
Nice that your dad could get a better model and you get the benefit.
ENjoy your new toy!
It is the same for me and when my wife gets a new phone. I'm the
gadgety-guy whereas she just wants a phone with buttons that makes and
receives calls. I like the bells-and-whistles :-)
So when she gets a new phone, i can tell her what to look for 'cause I
will most probably get it (hee hee!)

Yes, you can.

They are just being anal. I have registered PAYG sim cards with them
using the IMEI of a completely different handset, no problem at all.
However, I was under the impression that you no longer have to
register Orange PAYG.

The problems come if a phone is lost or stolen with the "wrong" SIM in it.
Getting Orange to bar the IMEI of the handset that isn't registered to
that SIM is nigh on impossible.
Funny that other operators don't seem to have this problem. Both Virgin
and Tesco never even asked what the IMEI of my phones were when I
registered with them.

So what?

Good. If it is stolen, it will do not good to get it barred. If it is
just lost, you may find it again, and you'll be glad it isn't barred.

There is no reason why they should. If they want to know the IMEI of
the phone you are using, they can see it on their system. It is
reported to the network when you switch the phone on. Though I doubt
they care what the IMEI is.

I disagree. It will stop the little scrote who nicked it using it. Most
opportunist thieves don't export the phones they nick to Afghanistan or
wherever, they use 'em. If you find a lost phone it can be unbarred again.

So why do Orange insist on it..?

There are 2 levels of registration, if you like. When you buy the SIM
card is active for voice and incoming SMS, but not outbound SMS,
voicemail key 1 etc. Also, no promotions allowed until full registration
(I.e. name and address etc) have been completed.
