What on earth is going on with Vodafone stores' phone numbers at the
    moment?

Wanted to call my local store (Southampton) to find out if they had any
Motorola V3Xs in stock as I'd rather get one today than wait for
    delivery tomorrow.

The phone number given for the store (and all stores) on the Vodafone
store finder is 08454 400194, which I call. After a long and rambling
message about how I don't need to call this number when I can simply
call 194 from my Vodafone mobile (uh, I don't have one yet), I try and
navigate the menu system, which has absolutely no mention of getting
    hold of your local store.

Eventually, by selecting various options that don't apply to me but
seem the only way of getting to speak to a person, I get through to a
real person, who supplies me with a local landline number for the
store. I call it. Pre-recorded message telling me I can't call the
store on this number anymore, and need to call 08454 400194. Oops.

So I call again, listen to the messages again, select the various
options, and decide to try a different tact by calling the Vodafone
direct sales number on 0870 3665321. They can't help - after all
they're direct sales, nothing to do with the stores - but they transfer
me to someone who can. I'm given a number for my local store, this time
    a mobile number.

I call my local store on their mobile number, and get the message
'Sorry, this person's phone is switched off. Please try again later'.

Now getting a bit frustrated, I call back the sales line, get
transferred again, and ask if there are any other numbers. No, there
aren't - the one turned-off mobile is the ONLY way I can contact
Vodafone Southampton. No, they can't put me through directly. No, they
can't check the stock from their end. The agent agrees with me that
there's absolutely no way of checking the stock at the store without
    actually going there.

I can't believe this request is that out of the ordinary? Having not
been a Vodafone customer for over four years, I'm seriously considering
not bothering and sticking with Orange, having spent the best part of
45 minutes on the phone trying to find out something pretty simple and
    failing.

Vodafone retail removed all the land lines from stores last year.

All stores have about 4 Vodafone mobiles, each one assigned to different
people. IE in head office they have for each store a Duty Manager number and
    so on....

I assume as they are very busy at the moment, they may of switched the
phones off (Naughty). Or maybe you have been given a lower priority mobile
    number for that store.

It does make sense, the cost savings from using Business Rates with BT, or
any landline company, when store can use free Vodafone's.

Well the two people I spoke to swore blind that that mobile was the
only contact they had, if there are more, they're not dishing them out
readily. The cost savings to Vodafone aren't really relevent to me -
all I'm concerned about is how easy it is to get though, and at the
moment, it's impossible. As it happens, the phone and package I want
isn't really available with anyone else so I've not got a lot of
choice, but if it was something that I could have got elsewhere, I
would have done it by now.

I had a similar situation trying to get my local O2 store back in january.
No direct number - phone one national number & you're put through
automatically to your local store, which worked. The only problem being that
there are about 3 O2 stores local to me & I was trying to get a particular
one that i knew had easy parking, so when I asked which store I'd got
through to the girl treated me as if i wasn't quite right "The O2 shop,
sir", "yes, I know, but WHICH one?".

Vodafone don't use fixed phones. Even their head office is all
    mobiles.

Vodacom in Croydon [and O2 in Slough] definitely have cabled desk phones.
    (Spent time at both)

Yes but they are probably all plumbed directly into a Vodafone switch,
with no reliance on BT or any other backhaul.

Orange are very much mobile-oriented too, but at least have "landline"
(quote marks used intentionally since they're actually 0870s) numbers for
    their main offices.

I suppose you can't blame any network for using mobiles internally - cost
and mobility savings both make sense. But this report about Voda seems to
suggest the system is making customer contact a little difficult and
    potentially expensive.

    Jon.
