The manager was telling you a lie. Not a word of what he told you was
true.
1. Orange get paid for every outgoing 0800 call. Not paid much, but
paid, as opposed to having to pay the terminating network to deliver
the call.
2. 0800 calling cards used to call overseas number charge the card
holder for the international leg, not the network they call from.
3. Orange charge an extortionate rip-off rate for international calls
(they used to charge vastly less, but they "simplified" the price up).

Hmmm. Time to get on with my Asterisk box. Then I can call 0800 from my
mobile via my BT landline. And the international calls (using a call
prefix of course)!!!

You may as well just use our geographic call-through for doing that?!

Well, the opportunity cost may have been £20k, I suppose, but that's
not real money as you or I understand it.
