On the Nokia 6230i how does one find out the relevant ESN / IMEI info so
if the phone is pinched one can have the details ready to cancel it?

And when shops advertise phone unblocking would this not allow thieves
to get the phone to work again, or is it only to make the phone
accessable to all networks, rather than the network where the contract
    was arranged?

    Thanks.

Take the battery out and look for a bar code on the phone this is usually
the IMEI number. On the Nokia I have to hand it reads 350986/xx/xxxxxx/x

No, unlocking a phone *should* not interfere with the IMEI number on the
phone. On newer phone it is very difficult (although not impossible) to
modifiy the IMEI, so almost certainly an unlocking will not include
modifying the IMEI as a matter of course.

SIM number should be written on the sim card itself .. as has already been
stated you can look at the sticker on the phone where the battery goes ...
or you can enter *#06# on your phone and it should show you the IMEI on
screen ... just press the "end call" button to clear the screen.

Are you perhaps confusing 'unlocking' with 'unBlocking'? They're NOT the
    same.

Unblocking is changing the IMEI so that a previously barred handset can be
used again. Very illegal in the UK.

The maximum is 5 years for changing an IMEI if I recall. Not a very
    competitive tariff (*groan*).

You might upset the Scots ...they're in the UK but not subject to the stuff
    churned out by Westminster.
