Has anyone here had any experience with mobile phone signal amplifiers such
as the one at http://cellantenna.co.uk/repeater/cae50.htm ?
I live in a house, the walls of which seem impenetrable to high frequency
radio waves. Mobile signal is fine until you get through the door and then
the signal is totally lost. This seems like a realistic (if expensive)
solution, but are there any others or suggestions of alternative models? The
product linked above seems to be the only one I can find via Google in the
UK.

Does the mobile work if it's on a windowsill?
If yes, then this would alow you to connect a DECT phone to it.
http://www.phonelabs.com/prd05.asp
You can then make & receive calls using a normal phone.
PS. Ignore the statements that indicate that you can also connect your
normal PSTN line. Whilst this is true, it only applies if you have American
wiring.

Interesting gadget but I bet it's more expensive than a Bluetooth headset,
which would also let you leave the phone on the windowsill and has the added
advantage of not frying your brain quite so much...

Yes, they are illegal in the UK.

Only solutions which involve wired antennae. Feel free to call if
you would like to talk through the options. Aerials are the easy bit
- it's the damn phone adapters which are difficult!

Nice, but not entirely practical as I cannot take the phone's contacts list,
texts etc around with me.

Interesting.

For a wired solution I could probably sort something, but then I cannot
carry the phone around while connected, which rather defeats the object.
Any wireless solutions?

Not really except an indirect (but very effective one) of using
something like a Nokia Premicell connect to a DECT phone base
station. You need to put your SIM into the Premicell (effectively a
wall mounted mains powered GSM phone with a normal telephone
interface) and then use the DECT phone(s) around the house. For much
shorter range a Bluetooth headset will work.

That's true - to an extent. If the device you connect it to supports Caller
ID by Name, the name & number will show up on inbound calls, if you have the
name stored in the mobile.
Walk to the window to read/send a text.
Connect a dect phone with a large memory to the unit to deal with your
non-portable contacts.
Move house?
At £500 for the signal booster, I know what I'd go for.

I wish I was affiliated with dock-n-talk. It works much better than a
premicell as the user just plugs his phone in, which it charges whilst
docked. No fiddling with swapping SIMs, or 2nd SIMs

Re: Mobile phone signal amplifier
Wow thats expensive. Before going that far try basic signal boosters. I use
them on my phones and signal strength has gone up quite a bit in the low
signal areas I travel throught alot. They are really cheap, I got mine from
Ebay. 10 for less than £7

That's because they are really useless. I'm regularly offered them
for 10 cents each in lots of a few hundred so the eBay scam meisters
do quite well out of them. Unfortunately I'm yet to come across one
which makes any difference whatsoever in measured tests.
