Hi AMO,
Thanks for your advice. Had posted this message since on many forums it
has been mentioned that d600 has many faults like
1) camera being uncovered unlike d500
2) battery very low - have to charge within 12 hours.
3) the slider shakes in d600 unlike d500.
But if you say d600 is good, I will try that out.
Also could you please tell me to go for d600/d500 or SE w800i?
Thanks once again.

I see what you mean about the D600. All the professional reviews are
positive, but some of the reader reviews are more negative. I would
probably swing to the reader's reviews as a better overall view, but its one
of those things where if you go for an older model, unless substantially
cheaper than the newer version, you might feel gutted if there is a feature
on the newer phone.
I don't personally have this phone, as they are not really my type (as don't
buy it just based on my post ;0) ), but all my friends that have the D500
have rated it positively. The D600 is fairly new and I don't know anyone
that has it yet and so others on this group might be able to shed more light
on the issues.
The D500 is not without its problems though. For example, girls like to put
the phone in their bag, but it doesn't stop the phone from sliding open.
Personally, I think whether you go for a D500/600 or SE W800i is preference.
The SE W800i is designed as a walkman though. Again, this is not something
I go for - the battery life in phones is short enough - I don't want to
shorten it by using it as an MP3 player, but that's me.

Re: Samsung D500 or D600?
Hi AMO
Thanks a ton for the prompt response. I am still confused whether to go
for D500 or D600.
Could you please let me know if you come across anyone who has D600 and
his/her review?
Thanks again

well ive got the d500 and my brother has the d600. d600 seems nicer, better
camera, but like you said, the sliding fnuction doesnt seems as smooth or
stable on the 600 as it does no the 500. also again like you sai, the camera
is uncovered on the 600. Had the 500 for about a year now, and being used to
nokias it has a few little quirks, that are more irritating than anything.
Though i'm pretty happy with the 500, I'd be tempted to get the 600, in the
hope that they've fixed the little annoying things in the 500!

Hi Barry,
What are those quirks that you have mentioned? So do you say I should
go in for D600?
thanks

I have a D600 and can't say I have this problem. I use the phone for
about 60 mins of calls a day, a few texts and a bit of surfing, and
from full charge the battery lasts about 3 days.
One annoying thing, however, is that the "low battery" warning chime is
very quiet and easy to miss, and unlike the Nokia's that warn you for
hours before the battery runs completely flat, it doesn't give you too
much notice (or if it does, I don't hear it!).
> 3) the slider shakes in d600 unlike d500.
Not had this problem myself.

hi,
thanks for a prompt response. So you havent had any problems with D600
and are happy with it? Also has the fact that the camera is uncovered
affected you in anyway? Like the camera scratched due to dust ?
Thanks,

I think the D600 is the dog's bollox, to be quite honest. The build
quality is very good, very sturdy.
The camera lens is set back a little way into the phone, so I'd say it
is very unlikely to get scratched -- although a would guess a build-up
of dust/muck on the lens is a possibility. However, I've had mine in
my back pocket/coat pocket every day since I got it in November and
haven't had any dirt on it. I would imagine it would be easy to clean
with an ear-bud in any case.
Outdoor photos are much better quality than indoors photos, but I think
that's the case with most camera phones, and lower-end standalone
digital cameras.
The front screen is very large on the D600 and I was worried about that
getting easily scratched in my pocket with keys; so worried in fact
that for the first week I left the sticky-plastic cover from the
factory on the front of it. I quickly got fed up with that, and again,
it has been in my pocket with keys/coins for almost 2 months and no
scratches at all on the body of the phone or the screen.
Some little annoyances; you can't install Java apps via the USB cable
or bluetooth, it has to be through the phone's web browser and the
phone isn't as good in weak signal reception areas as some of the older
Nokia's I've had (but only marginally). Oh, and the incoming SMS alert
tones can't be customised; you're stuck with Samsung's selection of
about three.

Re: Samsung D500 or D600?
Thanks again. So if there is no problem with d600 i think i can opt for
that. But would like to know if the slider is smooth like D500. And how
often does it need to be charged? You had mentioned that battery is not
a problem. Its similar to Nokia then.
Correct me if i am wrong ..
Plus points compared to d500
1.good camera
2. wider screen
3. good battery life
4. smooth slider like d500
Minus points
1. not good in signal weak signal reception areas.
2. cannot install Java apps using USB
3. camera not covered - but still not a problem if the phone can be
kept covered.

just little things... Like i said, i'm used to nokias. For example, if I'm
using predictive text, i type a word, go to the next one, and then realise
that the previous word was wrong. I can't go back to it and chagne it with
"next word" like I can on the nokia. I have to go back, delete the word,
type it in again, and then hit "next word".
What else... When in a phone call, you can adjust the volume by using the
up/down keys on the side. however, if you call have entered any numbers in
when - for example - you call the answering machine, the buttons stop doing
anything. so if you want to adjust the volume yuo ahve to delete the numbers
and then use the side buttons.
The sync software adds "all day events" in outlook as being over two days as
it does them from 23:59 to 00:01... which annoys me royally. Or at least it
used to, this may well have been fixed, I did email them and they said they
were fixing it..
I'm sure there's a few more but I can't think of them right now. They aren't
really anything too bad, just little things like that. Obviously, they may
have been fixed in a new firmware that I don't have...
I'm also unsure if they're fixed on the 600 (I dont think the sms predictive
text thing is)

With regard to the SE W800i, if you don't want a Walkman phone, then look at
the Sony Ericsson K750i which is a fantastic handset
