Vodafone 3g data card - download rates

I've just bought a Vodafone 3g data card for my laptop and got it
running for the first time just now.

The mobile connect window is showing that I'm downloading (a 40mb test
file off one of my servers) at around 360kbps, yet my FTP download is
only coming down at 36kbps. If I stop the download the mobile connect
window settles at 0, so I know there is nothing else sucking my
bandwidth.

Whats the deal here? I've got 3/5 signal strength bars, it is
connected by 3G and not GPRS. I'm located in Norwich city centre.

Apologies if this seems like a dumb question, but are you sure you are not
confusing bits and bytes?

Are you sure about that?

If you are using a 384Kbps downlink, the maximum FTP speed you could
get is around 36KBps

36kbps is extremely slow.

360k? No way. Your download was running at 36k/sec.

The Vodafone dashboard on my PC clearly shows speeds as 100's kbps. So
the original poster and I are seeing the same output - even if it is wrong.

3G should be able to run at 384kbps and I know it can, because I've

download speeds.

speed (such as my FTP client) reports in kBYTES/second.

Despite both using the kbps notation. A bit confusing.

I was sold this card on the basis of kBYTES per second by the Vodafone
shop, so it's a little disappointing. However, 36k/sec is still
sufficient for what I need it for.
