Having lost my phone today/had it nicked,, and ringing up 02 to tell
them this, they say they have blocked both the phone and the SIM.

Does this mean that any info contained on the SIM such as text messages,
pictures, phone numbers, etc, will not be accessable by whoever has the
    phone?

It is a Nokia 6230i if that matters.

I think you'll find the data is STILL accessible, if carried on the SIM, and
    within the phone menu.

In blocking/barring the SIM, they stop it communicating with the network, no
matter which phone it is put in.

In blocking the handset, they bar the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment
Identity), so the phone will not communicate with the network, no matter
which SIM is inserted. (rendering the phone useless*)

*Only useless until the IMEI is changed, which is in fact illegal, and
    carries high penalties if caught.

Yep, a lot of information is carried on a mobile....

    :-(

    NB/

To be 100% sure, contact the network, and get the definitve answer, but I
    believe I am correct.

If you had the PIN enabled, you'll be fine, as they wont be able to guess
    it.

Pictures are not stored an the SIM for starters, and the info will only
be protected if you set a PIN for the SIM.

And only within the UK. I understand that the blocked IMEI list is only
distributed within the UK - not to countries outside the UK - eg. Africa
etc. Apparently in some African countries the black market for mobiles
is so prevalent that practically no one buys/sells legitimate ones
simply because they cannot compete on price with the black market.

    Ehhh?
Put a legit SIM in and they'll have acces to the phones memory. The PIN
    is a SIM thing

I'd sooner trust the 'regulars' on here to give a "definitive answer". :-)

African Black Market eh? lol. Made me smile anyway

Bear in mind though that not all black Africans are dodgy thieves - I sold
my new 8310 T-Mobile upgrade a while back to a Nigerian and he paid a fair
    price in cash. Nice fella.

With the "black Market?" was that a Freudeon slip??

I "believe" the same applies to most of the rest of Europe also, in as much
as there is not a reciprocal barring protocol
