I've been testing my mothers old Motorola, as she's complained of very
    short battery life between charges.

It was showing Low Battery in the display when I came home last night at
7pm, so I left it on until I went to bed at 11:30pm and it was still going
    strong.

Have done the same again tonight, and it's still OK.

I tested the battery with a voltmeter tonight, and got a reading of 5.5v
(4.8v battey). Also, the level on the phone's battery meter hasn't moved
    for two nights.

How likely is it that the power level detection circuits are faulty rather
than the battery. I had a Psion Sienna PDA many years ago, and that had a
faulty low battery warning within a few weeks.

Done that already, unfortunately, after she bought the phone, as she
didn't tell/ask me first. Told her to look at the Sagem (Simply) with
Vodaphone thing, but the damage is done (even paid £29.99, when it was
    £18.99 on-line).

There should be some protection for old people who don't know what they're
doin :-) (only joking of course, buyer beware etc.)

There should be a health warning on Sagems.

My dad uses a Nokia 3410, not easy to get a new one now, over christmas
I bought a couple of Nokia 2650 on Orange at 30 quid each from P4U,
unlocked them with Crux, now they take any sim.
A little harder to use than 3510, but same menu structure.

For a simple phone, the Nokia 3210 is hard to beat. The problem is finding
good batteries for them now, which sort of defeats the object re. OP's
    problem ;-)

    Paul,

it could be the power level detection circuits, regardless of the
indicator as long as the battery is getting through the day and not
switching off you probably don't need to replace it.

If you want I can supply a replacement M3788 handset, no battery or
charger, and unlocked, for £8 inc postage - email is valid.

This is blatent advertising in a non advertising group, for which
Unimobiles are well known as spammers.

If you have something to offer the OP, ask him to email you off group.

    Doh!
