Just delved into the world of GPRS, seeing as I have recently got a phone
that is capable of doing this... The question I need to ask is: Does the
speed and performance vary from one mobile to another? I ask because
recently I was told I could expect slightly faster than dial-up speeds when
using GPRS. My experience is that my system appears to be slower than a
dial-up connection, and I just wondered if my phone (or its config) could be
slowing down the performance? The phone is quite old I suppose, but was a
good and popular phone in its day (Sony Ericsson T610). I am connecting to
the internet using GPRS with this phone and using bluetooth to use my Pocket
    PC for internet access/email etc.

Yesterday I was told by a friend that he reckons the maximum speed of GPRS
is around 17k a second. Mine is nothing like that speed and I just wondered
why its so slow generally? The network I use is Orange.

I would appreciate any advice on what sort of speed is to be expected and if
my equipment is letting down the connection speed?

I was also told of some new technology in GPRS called 'EDGE'... Anyone got
    any comments on this ?

Could it be that my phone isn't configured for maximum speed, or is that not
    a possibility?

Thanks in advance for your help nd comments.

    Dave

I've use GPRS on Orange PAYG using a Nokia N-Gage. The best speed I've
    consistently got is 5K/s.

I always gained the impression that GPRS was much faster, and for years I
have been using straight dialup (on my Everyday 50 its inclusive) - I
have been thinking of upgrading but frankly your comments have turned me
off the idea again. I can't see that it offers any benefits to me (with
PPP compression I can get 5k/s on text parts of web pages in any case)
except that it will cost a lot more.

does anybody know if any modern phones have High Speed Data capability?

GPRS speed is dependent on the number of channels the phone can theoretically
use - and the load on the basestation. I always seem to get around 20k/s with
my Motorola V500 on Orange! I think the theoretical maximum is somewhat faster.

: I always gained the impression that GPRS was much faster,

    It is in my experience!

Using GPRS with O2 I can download on my laptop (hooked to nokia n70) at
    around 5KB/s (40Kb/s).

The speed can vary according to the load on the base station and the signal
strength.I would guess the type of mobile could also affect it.

When in a 3G area (not often on O2!) I can download at around 20KB/s
    (160Kb/s)
