Are these any use? Do they actually work? Does anyone in here use one and
    find it improves the reception?

Has anyone tested these to see if they make any difference to reception in
    poor coverage areas?

    Or are they just rubbish?

If they do work...? How do they work (techically), when they have no
physical connection with the inbuilt antenna...

I would like to hear your experiences of them.....

Plus you can buy them for around 29p each, the OP could buy one and then see
for themselves that they are a waste of money.

If you had a photo of the actual antenna it might have helped!

You can get antenna that boost performance. My MkII Technophone analog
cellphone came with a TNC connector and a quarter wave stub. Replacing this
with a longer 5/8 wavelength antenna with a loading coil gave +3dB. This
worked OK at over 40km from a base station. When in the car I used to
connect an external aerial with two semi-turns (supplied by Antenna Products
    Ltd.) which allegedly gave +4.5dB.

For commercial use the base station end can have antenna like this : -

    http://www.antennaproducts.com/HD10d...MRGSMomni.html

(from Antenna Products Inc - no relation I think) giving +10dB, however
these are a little bulky for portable use.

If you are in a fixed position you can go directional and concentrate the
energy emitted into / received from a particular solid angle - the same
website gives 120 degree antenna giving 13dB, however there is nothing to
stop the use of folded dipole, Yagi array or even parabolic reflectors
(large though even at 1G8Hz) to improve the gain between fixed points.

Be aware however that for GSM (as used in the UK) there is a technical limit
of 35km beyond which GSM won't work.

Another issue is the extent to which on modern phones part(s) of the aerial
are effectively inside the phone - changing what is on the outside will only
work if the whole signal comes out of the socket.

I posted a picture of the antenna, its the sticky backed brown rectangle at
    the bottom of the packet....

Its actually a clear bit of sticky backed plastic with metalic tracks on
    it......

Its made to peel off the backing and stick inside your phone (behind the
    battery) to increase your signal/reception.

I only posted this as a joke really... But some people reckon they have
improved their reception by sticking one in their phone.....

It is not going to work.

    Yeah Right what?
I really did post it as a joke. I know it sounds really daft, but we fitted
one of these and took it to a car park outsde our local hospital where
traditionally we have never had a useable mobile signal from Orange. After
sticking one of these in the back of the phone we suddenly gained a signal.
I'm not convinced it was the sticky aerial that did the job, but something
had improved by quite an amount. I'm being serious here... I wanted to
hear from people who had tried one of these in an area of low/no signal to
see if it really did make any difference. I was of the opinion that
something like this couldn't possibly make any difference, but it appeared
that it did make a difference.

Phone we tested it on Nokia 6210

No offence meant and all that, but the fact that you actually got as far
as taking it out of the box and attaching it to your phone to try it out
does kind of suggests that you might have thought it would really do
something, no? And I'm afraid that if it had been even slightly in jest
you wouldn't have written what you had in your first post... it was only
when you received several 'duh' replies that you told us it was only a
    joke. Hence 'yeah, right'!

Having seen these for many years and not really thinking anything much about
them I was faced with having two of these given away as part of a pda
package I bought last October. I bought a leather case and accesories for
my PDA from a Ebay auction. The accessories were very good, but along with
them came a couple of these sticky aerials. Well of course I had to try one
didn't I? With nothing to lose, I gave it a go and seemed to experience
    some improvements in reception.

Whether or not the improvement was coincidence is another matter, but it
seemed that reception was improved on my test.

Thanks to all who responded, and to anyone else who might still care to
    comment.

    Regards
    Steve
