My searches so far suggest that the Opera Mini browser needs my Motorola V550 to have an "Internet
Profile" instead of a "Wap Profile" but that I can't have one on o2 PAYG.
    Is this correct?
It's complicated by the fact that I don't know what an internet profile is or how it differs from a
wap profile. I can find some "Web Sessions" on the phone (involving IP addresses, DNS, GPRS Apns,
domains etc.) but have not come across any "Profiles"
My phone's browser works OK on o2 Active GPRS and I can do POP3 mail but it can't cope with web
pages as well as Mini (seems to...)
I'd be obliged if any kind folk could explain to me or point me to resources

A 'profile' is just a common name for the collection of settings you need
for network access (APN, username, password, GPRS or CSD etc). Phones
organise them in different ways and may call them something else but usually
you can have several 'profiles' on your phone at once and choose which you
one you want to be active (e.g.if you use your handset with different SIMs
from time to time). Networks can use different 'profiles' to enable
different things such as MMS, WAP access and internet access.

Basically a 'WAP profile' will tend to only allow you to connect to your
mobile network's WAP gateway, whereas an 'Internet profile' is more like
full internet access as you'd have on a home PC connected via an ISP.

With O2 PAYG you are basically getting a 'WAP Profile' though as their WAP
gateway also acts as an HTTP proxy you can get a degree of basic web access
(for example, SyncML works over O2 PAYG) and I believe you also get access
to the O2 POP3 and SMTP servers but not anyone elses. It sounds like you
are already aware of this given you are using your phone for browsing and
    e-mail.

So I'd speculate that you ought to be able to use Opera Mini to give you the
same access as your phone's browser does already and perhaps do a better job
of it. However I can well imagine that secure HTTP isn't going to work, and
indeed nor will anything much beyond the standard port 80.

    Thanks, Graham
So, it seems that the only way to access the internet on o2 PAYG is through their WAP gateway. I
seem to be able to go to many non-WAP webpages by entering their URL. (but often they lock up)
Can I alter the profile settings (by creating a new profile - called a web session on my phone!) so
as to still be able to connect to the portal while causing Opera Mini to think that it is an
    Internet profile?
Seems a bit of a long shot....

Re: Opera Mini and o2 PAYG

    Ok, I sorted it:

    Using a Motorola V550 on UK o2 PAYG SIM-only

I went to Web Sessions where the “profiles” are shown

and created a new profile and inserted these settings

then set that profile as default. I suspect most of them

are unnecessary. (I could have copied the the

existing locked profile and edited it.)

    Name: Your choice - anything.

    Homepage: http://wap.o2.co.uk or any link.

e.g. create your own webpage of favourite links.

    Service Type 1: HTTP

    Gateway IP 1: 193.113.200.195

    Port 1: 8080

    Domain 1: left blank.

    Service Type 2: HTTP

    Gateway IP 2: 193.113.200.195

    Port 2: 8080

    Domain 2: left blank.

    DNS 1: 193.113.200.200

    DNS 2: 193.113.200.201

    Timeout: 15 minutes

    CSD No. 1: left blank.

    User Name 1: left blank.

    Password 1: left blank.

    Speed (Bps) 1: 9600

    Line Type 1: Modem

    CSD No. 2: left blank.

    User Name 2: left blank.

    Password 2: left blank.

    Speed (Bps) 2: 9600

    Line Type 2: Modem

    GPRS APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk

    User Name: payandgo

Password: entered as “password” - no quotes

I also went to Java Settings and inserted the

    first DNS as above.

With these settings I could connect using Opera Mini and

my ordinary browser still works. Now I had better test MMS!
    Pat.

PS thanks for encouraging me to persevere, Graham!

PPS Opera Mini is a little free java application browser which does a reasonable job of reading full
webpages. I think that I will find it useful for such things as getting telephone numbers or
timetable details off the web when I am ... err... mobile

opera mini will use whatever your 'net settings are setup to be in your
in-built phone application. You could try doing the following: delete the
username and password from the profile.

    Try the following APNs: mobile.o2.co.uk

    web.o2.co.uk

I'm sure I got it working on my PAYG mobile a while back with some
    fidgeting...
