Wife and I are both on Orange ED50. Last year she got a free upgrade to
Nokia 6230.
I want a 6280 - they don't do it. How about an N70? £258 Sir!!
So I decided to move on. Took 2 days to get through to the Leaving
number. Condesended to offer me the N70 for 'only' £199. Wouldn't
discuss the new tarrifs, but did offer me one that was about 50% dearer
than Vodafone.
Asked for a PAC and was told that it would be texted to me in about 30
seconds......
4 hours later - I am still waiting..
How do they stay in business - or should I say - do they want to?

Was told last week in my local Orange shop that the 6280 should be
available very soon (end of this month/start of April).
As for the upgrade price on the N70, its a premium, high cost handset,
are you expecting Orange to just give it away? Especially since you
are on such a low tariff.
If you were to move to a higher tariff (eg Your Plan 120 or 200), you
would almost certainly be able to get the N70 at less than the
original price you were quoted.
Incidentally, where/who quoted the upgrade price. Was it an Orange
shop, their website or did you phone them ? (or was it another shop?).

Apparently Orange staff aren't allowed to reveal info on the new
tariffs yet.
As for them "condescennding" to offer you a lower price, what do you
expect. Given that Orange (and others) try to get their money back
through line rental + extras, they aren't going to give much of a
discount for someone on a very cost tariff. Especially if you rarely,
if ever use more than the standard allowance.

Well, I guess one way they stay in business is by not over subsidising
handsets for people who are on contracts where they know they won't be
able to recoup the subsidy.

It's not out yet because nokia fouled up the first version of firmware.

Probably because you spend next to nothing by any chance?

By looking after customers who spend more than £15 per month.

I spent a lot more than that, they didn't look after me. Tesco payg now for
me and the wife whilst I decide on the next contract, cheap as chips
compared to Orange and yet they seem to make a profit on it.

Virgin mobile is far cheaper than Tesco - I take it you don't bother
comparing prices and are happy to just accept any old agreement.
If you want the highest cost PAYG try Vodfone. Virgin were giving away SIM
cards with £5 credit on the other week.

My sentiments exactly Jon!
Everyone expects something for nothing! People chuck hundreds of pounds to
BT every year, but do BT supple a free DECT phone every 12 months? No!
Why should a mobile be any different? The sooner subsidies are slashed in
half, the better.

Not if you call other mobile networks, they aren't. Or if most of your
calls are to a very few numbers.
The main reason not to choose Tesco is that the company is too
powerful for the public good.

Orange upgrades now go on a "value rating" based on 6-12 months history,
therefore changing tariff would no immediate effect on upgrade price.

Not if, like my wife you only call a handful of numbers.
She calls 2 in particular which are cross net 10p on Tesco 35p on
Virgin. She wants to do things simply, do dial through is out
Which network is cheaper always depends on calling pattern. A year ago
Virgin would have been fine for me, now O2 wins hands down.

Apparently since January it is based on the last 3 months. My huge bills
from holkiday calls abraod last year would have made it very different!!
