I've just had an sms message to my phone saying 'update' apply new
settings... Are Orange PAYG sending out updates, or is this a scam? I don't
know if to accept the update or not? Help !!! Will it screw up the phone
if I accept it? Is there any way to know its genuine or not?

I've had similar messages purporting to be from Orange several times
over the last two or three years. I ignored every one. They even sent me
a replacement SIM card on one occasion, which I put in a drawer
somewhere.
The phone is still working fine.

A replacement SIM would have been to upgrade your current SIM with some
new functionality.

Yes, I realised that, but I already have all the functionality I need:
make a call, receive a call, maintain an address book. Mono screen.
That's all. No camera, no colour, no games, no other fancy services. I'm
happy!

The new SIM might have had a larger phonebook.
