Hello,
Does anyone know if Orange sells information as to when a customer's
commitment date is approaching? I'm currently about a month away from being
out of contract with Orange and nearly every day I've been receiving a call
from various companies trying to upgrade my handsets and sign me up to a new
contract.
How do these people get this information?

Information is a commodity to be bought and sold like tea bags or cars. If
you've been receiving cold calls and your contract date is approaching I
would say there was circumstantial evidence your details have been passed on
or more likely sold on to other companies.

Remember it's around this time of year that you might have made enquiries
with various companies one, two or how ever many years ago. They keep hold
of that kind of information.

Sometimes it's guesswork. I've had calls mid-term of this nature. Sign
up to the Telephone Preference Service - makes it illegal for people to
cold call you.

No they do not. Why would they when they can upgrade you directly and
not pay out a commission?
> How do these people get this information?
Various sources coupled with random number dialling. In my shop there
are 12 Orange demonstration handsets with nearly sequential numbers, and
every so often we get a call on these numbers. No sooner have you hung
up on one call than the next phone rings.

Re: Does Orange sell commitment details?
I don't buy the idea that it's purely random.
I have *never* dealt with anyone except Orange itself for my phones (yeah, I
know, more fool me!), so no other company has my details, renewal date etc.
I have never had anything but the occasional text offering new deals in the
past 8 years. But this week - funny.. just as my latest 12 months is up - I
had two voice calls in the space of 24 hours from two different companies
trying to pass themselves off as Orange (one was the Orange Upgrade Centre..
and the chav on the other end dodged two questions aimed at finding out if
that was really part of Orange.. then hung up abruptly - swearing under his
breath - on the third).
Like other posters, I too would be surprised if Orange were selling this
stuff on and risking losing business to their own resellers. But I do wonder
whether someone there's been a bit busy on the photocopier after hours..
because it all seems a bit more than coincidental to me.
And, if I was Orange (interesting mental pic) I'd also be taking a pretty
dim view of the companies who pretended to be me. 'Cos these both behaved
like scum.

I share the views of the previous poster.
I have received many calls from 3rd party dealers offering to upgrade
my 'Orange' phone as I near the end of a 12 month period. Very often
these dealers try to create the illusion that they 'are' Orange and
only tell the full truth when questioned.
I would believe that this was truly random except for one reason. They
always know I have an Orange phone _but_ my number was ported to
Orange from Vodafone two years ago. Thus the theory of them
determining the network by the number prefix is out of the window.

Remember Orange Terms and conditions say they can pass your information
to who the hell they like. There is no way to opt out of this at
sign-uyou have to do it afterwards by ringing CS.
Not UK law - but hey when have Orange ever obeyed that.
Come back Henry V - all is forgiven

But they could determine that the number was on Orange from the ringing
tone.

I can do that, you can do that. Do you really think they sit listening
for three initial rings before the normal 'bur bur'. Most automated
company dialers only allow the operator to pick up once the call is
connected.

You are of course right. My comment was made in the light of Jon's
comments, that they didn't do that. He does work for Orange after all
:-)

Sequential is the word I should have used.

Nor do the cold-callers. You need to give them your postcode before they
can look this up.

Then it wasn't Orange. It was a dealer.

They are striking off distance sellers left right and centre at the
moment. All it takes is a couple of complaints about the same firm and
they won't be selling Orange much longer. T-Mobile are also culling
distance sellers for the same reason.

Re: Does Orange sell commitment details?
It is a breach of telecom regulations to cold call numbers in sequence or at
random.
Doesn't that apply to mobile numbers ?
If not, why not and what is Ofcom doing about it ?

Bugger all, obviously.
