I may give up trying to get GPRS working on my old Amena PAYG SIM and just
use the remaining credit for voice calls.

So, I'll maybe get a GPRS enabled PAYG SIM from Movistar or Vodafone ES (or
    even a new Amena one).

Does anybody know what are the PAYG GPRS rates are on these cards (using in
Spain not roaming) ? And what I need to go for tariff name-wise? Voice rates
    not particularly an issue.

    Thanks,

    Fred.

Charges for accessing GPRS from a prepay card (VAT of 16% not included):

    Vodafone: 50c/session. 1 session = 256K or 10 minutes.

    http://www.vodafone.es/Vodafone/Part...,21621,00.html

    Movistar: €3.072/MB.

    http://www.movistar.es/particulares/...rsumts.htm#dos

Amena: No bundle: 10c/connection, 1c/K. WAP only, no Internet. *
'DataOcio 3' bundle: €3 bundle (you get €3 of GRPS connection included),
    10c/connection, 0.6c/K. Minimum charge 10c/session.

    * Thinking about your problem connecting to the Internet with Amena, it
    might be because of this.

    Yep.

    Movistar 8 euros/megabyte
    Vodafone 8 euros/megabyte
    Amena 6 euros/megabyte (min 3 euros/month)

I just came back from Spain. I used a Virgin "pay by
direct debit" SIM which is £5.12/megabyte in about
160 different countries (and the UK). Amena would
    have been cheaper, but:
    (1) I could pick which ever network was fastest, and
    (2) I can use the Virgin SIM in 159 other countries, and
    (3) I can manage the SIM easily in the UK.

    I forgot:
    (4) no need to ring Spanish CS to enable GPRS
    (5) no GPRS settings to install other than Virgin

I have quite an old Virgin SIM card which I use abroad for voice
calls. I pay by direct debit. I too am going to Spain shortly.

Is it likely that this will work straight away on GPRS if I put the
correct settings in the phone, or do I need to contact Virgin customer
    services to get it enabled?

Also, could you point me to the actual settings to use or are they on
    the Virginmobile web pages.

    Many thanks,

    Dukat.

Same here...I have a virgin UK sim that roams here in the USA. I had the
GPRS settings sent to the phone and used it when I had a layover in
spain last year. The cost was not too bad either. On a Western
caribbean cruise last year, I also used it to check email in a couple
of countries. My US provider (Not GSM) will not even work in these
countries. I pretty much use the virgin sim in any other country I
visit just for it's GPRS. For talking I use my international sim
(United mobile/riiing) which does not have data capability. I buy
virgin topups on ebay for a little bit less than face value.

My virgin sim (bought on ebay too) worked out of the box. I believe all
you need to do is get the settings to your phone. Here are teh settings
    for the UK providers: http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html

Heading out on a eastern Caribbean cruise at the end of the month, and
the virgin sim will definitely come in handy for data. They key thing
is that virgin charges the same for data regardless of roaming or not.
I hope that stays so. :-)

Not sure where they are on the VM site but settings are also listed here...

    http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html

Perhaps give them a go before you leave to see if it works OK? - when I
tried out my VM SIM it offered some free access to VM 'Bites' - good way
to test things out! That way you'd be able to give VM CS a call from the
UK if there are any problems rather than when you're over there. I
think they have everything automatically activated though.

    Cheers

    Alan

Cheers and thanks for the info and advice. I just tried it after
getting the settings sent from the Virgin web page. I can get to quite
a few WAP sites fine. Now I just need to switch the bluetooth on and
get my IPAQ to link to it for browsing and email.

    Many thanks,

    Dukat.
