    Hi,

I am trying to conect to a free wifi hotspot but with no luck. I've not used
wifi at all so am a complete novice. T-mobile don't have the vario on their
website at the mo so I can't find any guide.

Actualy I can "connect" via comm manager.

settings>wi-fi settings > menu >network cards > netstar shows as being
    connected.

However, when I launch Internet Explorer it gets as far as showing the
"Locating" message, then times out. I have no idea what (if any) setting I
    should change.

I have no home wifi set up to play with, all my "trial and error" must be
done in the shopping mall where the free hotspot is so isn't really
practical - a nice step by step idiots guide would be great

    TIA

    Hi

2 really useful resources I would recomend for your mda vario are:

xda developers as the mda vario is the same as the i-mate K-JAM, Qtek
9100, Orange SPV M3000 and O2 XDA Mini S which can be found here:
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/

and filesaveas for really useful pocket pc configuration information:
    http://www.filesaveas.com/wifi.html

The way it SHOULD work is your enable wifi and the PPC will tell you
the network is nearby and you say connect and if you need any security
key etc you put that in there and then. You might need to change your
'Connections' in your PPC menu and try switching between home(internet)
or work but I haven't got my PPC with me at the moment to check..

    Hi Andy,

OK I'll give it a go this afternoon.

Trouble is I want to get it working before the 7 days is up - otherwise I'm
    going to send it back.

    Cheers

I found this thread in your reference - seems a lot of people having same
    problem as me.
Trouble is no search facility - I couldn't find one - so 70 pages to trawl
    through.

Anyway I'll give it a go.

Be aware some hotspots will only let you connect with 802.11g not the
slower (but less power-hungry) 802.11b. There is a patch for the vario
floating around which will set the wireless card to connect at G, if all
else fails it could be worth installing that.

Thanks Geoff. I'll have a look.
Nothing I have tried so far works.

To reiterate it allows me to *connect* but when I try to browse to a page
with pocket IE it hangs on the "Locate" message.

Have a look around your network card settings and try and see if you've
    got an IP address assigned.

May times I've been told by the PDA that I am connected, when I fact my
IP is 0.0.0.0 or some random class B address (when I run a class C network).

Find out what your default gateway is, and try pinging it.
