Just received the following from Geoff at vgsmail:

    "Dear all,

It is now 8 months since I announced the closure of vgsmail and as
promised vgsmail has been running relatively unchanged since then. I
was orginally hoping to find someone to take over the service, but
unfortunately this hasn't happened yet for a number of reasons.

The schedule for closure is as follows:

Immediately - No new accounts will be allowed.
Immediately - No further credits will be accepted to existing accounts.
    1 July 2006 - Service closure."

A great shame because I've found vgsmail to be a fantastically useful
service, but he has given plenty of notice. I've been using vgsmail in
conjunction with pre-dial to mop up inclusive minutes on my Orange ED50
account through pre-dial's 0870 number and then transferring the credit
to Vgsmail. In effect I've been getting free text messaging for a
    couple of year's now.

One thing I've found really useful is the WAP interface for Vgsmail.
When I've been overseas I've logged into the WAP page through my
phone's browser and sent messages using my Vgsmail account at virtually
no cost rather than paying Orange's rate (25p?). I also love being able
to send messages via the web from my PC. When I'm sitting at my desk I
don't need to fiddle about with the phone, I can just type a text out
in about three seconds from a proper qwerty keyboard.

So any suggestions for keeping my text messaging bills down. I've
accepted that free messages are now off the radar, but I would like a
cheap service which offers WAP access for overseas use and ordinary web
    access too. Do any exist?

    I've found:
    Free SMS Text Messaging @ Free-SMS.co.nr :: Version 2

Amazingly easy, highly reliable and usage worldwide.

The best is it's free and no login.

    Hope this helps

    http://www.smsbug.com/

Not quite as reliable as smsbug, but fairly good. Only 3 eurocents a message
    as well.

I've tried to register with smsbug about 10 times, but it has never
sent the password. Is it still accepting new registrations?

I think so. It's never been a problem for me.

I assume you are entering your number 447...... etc?

I would recommend smsBug! We have been trying to use their service for some
month now. We have even translated the java application to Swedish.

BUT... only about 50% of our sent messages are delievered!

AND... the support isn't working either! We've been trying to reach them
about a month now... no luck...

You could have a look at http://www.messito.com Slightly more expensive but
    they deliever.

and there's an odd but fully free service at http://www.frog2frog.com It's a
bit special but since it's free, you can give it a try...

Both Messito and Frog2frog offer a small amount of free credits to test the
services. They both have a good web interface aswell.

We use Messito for professional purposes and Frog2frog for private purposes.

    Thanks

the 44 and the 7850 number were in separate boxes, and I've tried 3
    phones and 2 numbers

I've sent them an email, and will see if they reply.

The service at http://www.frog2frog.com does look interesting, but as
far as I can see is not fully free - you have to pay 4.9c per message
to people who don't also use the service (ie just about everyone) AND
you have to suffer some kind of enforced advertising on your phone! I
could just about put up with the adverts if the texts were free, but
I'm not going to pay to be advertised to!

    Texts ARE free!

You're not paying any real money! Actually, you can't. You could just
as well call these 4.9c, points or credits or whatever.

When texting a fellow "frogger" you'll receive credits (fake money).
Those can be used when texting non-froggers.

I agree it's a somewhat odd solution, but it serves our purposes.

I've not tried any of these, some need both parties to have the same
software client, but they may prove of use/interest.

We are using the Swedish version of Messito (.se) and it's works very
well! In this version you also have support for incomming SMS to web
and mail. The international version doesn't support that.

I could recommend www.messito.com and I'm not connected to any of the
    companies in this thread.
