T-Mobile let you send and receive email via text. You have an email
address in the form of [email protected]
More information here:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher...=phones_tfe_me
or go to the website, select phones and services, email solutions.

That doesn't actually answer the question asked. Do they provide email
alerts..?

Sorry, I should have been clearer.
If you forward your email to [email protected] then you will
receive the email as one or more text messages on your mobile. This will
alert you to the email, but unfortunately you will also be charged for it.
It might be cheaper to get web n walk, and tell your phone to check for
pop2 or imap mail every few minutes, which if not always on instant email,
will at least be frequent but slightly delayed email.

Yes. You can select various options including an option to have only alerts
sent to your phone (alternatively you can receive the email itself in text
message format). The alerts are 10p each however and, obviously, the email
text messages can cost more depending on the length of the email.

Re: Moving to T-Mobile from Orange - can I still get SMS alerts?
I've just moved from Orange (with text alerts) to T-Mobile Web'n'Walk.
Current options on T-Mobile do seem to be either 10p per each text
alert or get phone to check every few minutes (not a problem with
Web'nWalk).
In any case, attachment size limit on Orange is now way too low for me
(emails with attachments were simply not getting through to me and
being returned to sender).

In other words, they *don't* provide *free* alerts, which is what the OP
asked.
Question answered, anyway..!

Re: Moving to T-Mobile from Orange - can I still get SMS alerts?
I rang Orange to try and find out this and was told to ring their 50p
per minute number!
I said, in that case, I hope they know the answer when I ring.
I rang said number, answered by someone who hadn't a clue, could you
hold the line please...
Eventually, he came back with 'I think it's about 1 meg, but I'm not
sure'
When I wasn't too impressed with this lack of an answer, he said what's
your problem, it's a free service anyway.

I hope you got his name, that is worthy of a stinking letter to the Exec.
Office, not that they will do anything of course, but it will make you
feel better..!

But Orange don't provide free alerts *reliably* for many people. ;-)

Dare I say it (well yes I can, cos it's not about a certain VoIP
provider..!) - works ok for me..!
