Is there many difference in value between these two PAYG providers for
a low-end (infrequent, and brief-calls) user? Are there any
little-known factors I should consider before making my choice?
Thank you,

In my opinion you can't beat Tesco value at 15p a min and 5p texts for a low
user

New T-mobile PAYG is 12p/min cross net now but texts are 10p.

Tesco charges a flat rate, Virgin charges 15p/min for the first 5mins and
then it reduces to 5p for any further minute that 24 hour period. Even on
different calls made during the 24hours the first was made. You also get
free text to other virgins this summer.
Text messages are 10p to other networks on Virgin or 3p to other virgins
when the FREE offer is over in a few months. Cross network is around
35p/min on virgin, no idea on tesco. Both sites show the tarrifs.

Tesco is same rate to all UK networks. 20p/min on normal tariff (10p for 3
favourite numbers, or if a call bundle is purchased). Text messages I have
no idea, I never use them.

Tesco definitely, IMHO, although if you receive a lot of incoming calls
Virgin is one of the few with free voicemail retrieval. I have one on each
and I use the Tesco one for most of my calls but I use the Virgin number
for work, as most of the calls are incoming and often go to voicemail, so
I don't have to pay to retrieve them.
Note also that Virgin uses the T-Mobile infrastructure (Tesco uses O2) and
has considerably less coverage in many areas than other networks.
Be aware that there are 2 tariffs on Tesco, the Value one is cheaper for
calls in the UK but doesn't allow a lot of features and cannot roam
overseas.
Both websites give full details.

Re: Virgin PAYG vs. Tesco PAYG?
Thanks to all for the feedback. It looks like Virgin will suit me best
because of the pricing structure, and the international service on
PAYG. Also the phone I want is cheaper from Virgin than from Tesco.

You're a bit out of date now Ivor. :-)
There are now 3 tariffs on Tesco - the Value, the normal, and the Extra.
The Extra tariff is 10p a minute cross net, 5p a text, but requires a
£15 top up every month, otherwise it drops to the normal tariff.

Remember as pointed out elsewhere that the Virgin pricing is only 15p/5p
to Virgin and landlines. Cross network is significantly more expensive
than any of the Tesco prices.

PS.. In fact, their current tarrif sheet doesn't state that at all.

Yes it does, it's crystal clear, and in bold print:
Calls to other UK networks¹ 35p per minute
9th box down in main table.

Errr, following the link above, 10th item on the list immediately below
video calls clearly states that calls to other UK networks are 35ppm...

Yes, I saw that afterwards. I should have read the whole table more
carefully. I still think I might keep the Virgin deal, because of the
international coverage. Not sure.
Of course, either Tesco or Virgin could change their prices at any
time.
