I haven't been able to get network coverage on either of my O2 handsets
from around 3:30pm in the West/East Sussex areas this afternoon, and
calling the O2 numbers results in engaged tones via a BT landline.

Tried calling O2 'Customer Services', but they were engaged..... has
there been a massive outage or 'summin?

Nothing obvious on their web site either although i'm not sure service
status is something mobile operators tend to 'advertise'.

ah, just got through to O2, and yes, a "bit of a problem" covering the
whole of the Sussex area, apparently.

No mention of anticipated fix, nor the cause of the problem.

    oh well.....

Funny that. We've been having the same problem in the NorthWest for the last
couple of days. Reported it today and was sorted in hours...

Wonder if O2 are having national problems?

For a couple of years now (as I know, probably longer) o2 have been doing a
massive amount of upgrades to their network. This will either be small
additions of radios, adding racks, sectorising a site, swapping older kit
for new GPRS/EDGE kit etc. All of these operations will undoubtledly result
in some lack of service from a few minutes to maybe several or more hours.
But in the long term, a small amount of inconvienience for us the customer
is paid off by better coverage and better capacity.
