On PAYG does it always show balance with a # (hash) sign instead of a
£ (pound) sign or is my sons motorola L6 setup wrong.
Any ideas?

Hi,
Have you checked the language settings on the mobile? This can
sometimes be an issue if the settings are on a different country
setting, e.g. think how characters on a keyboard will vary if you
switch between UK and United States.
You can go through the menus: Settings > Initial Settings > Language

It always shows the # sign on both of my phones, a Moto V551 and a Nokia
3120.

It's always a #. It is on 3 that i've used
