I need to use my mobile phone to connect through my laptop for internet
access whilst abroad . I know I need a blue tooth connection and my mobile
to be unlocked so I can use a SIM card from the country I am visiting - how
can i find out what numbers will give me access to the internet whilst i am
abroad? (countries include: Italy, Estonia, South Africa & Poland.

You can use a foreign SIM. Sony Ericsson provide a mobile phone
configuration service through their website which you could use to set up
the phone for use on a foreign network. Other manufacturers probably do
similar services.
If you use GPRS access, many of the UK tariffs charge the same for data
access when abroad as they do at home, so it may not be worth the hassle of
changing. Check your own tariff.

The only one that does charge the same in UK and abroad for GPRS is Virgin
(£5 per mb on PAYG).
Buying a local sim card in Italy requires a stupid piece of bureaucracy
called a "coda fiscal" (or similar). In SA, pick up an MTN card at the
airport, GPRS is dirt cheap in SA. Don't know about Estonia or Poland.
Personally I think the Virgin payg is less hassle.

Amen to that, but I think you may need to set up direct debit to roam
(they will only take out what you use).
Orange etc. will charge you £8+ Mb roaming and in fact I kept the
Virgin SIM even when I had a local SIM in Oz and NZ cos less hassle
changing all my configurations and also they had charges for time
connected as well as downloads, so local not always cheaper.

Re: using overseas SIM card for internet access
All virgin payg sims roam and allow GPRS out of the box. I am in the US
and have bought 3 virgin sim for my family on ebay and they all can use
GPRS. I just needed to get the settings sent to the phones. Even used it
on a recent eastern caribbean cruise, since their GPRS charges are even
cheaper than my carrier here.
There is no need to register or setup anything. If you want to see
call/data log and cost then you have to register online.

Re: using overseas SIM card for internet access
In Estonia AFAIK GPRS/EDGE is only for subscribers, not PAYG.
But same time it is not hard to find WiFi access point - many
free (but may require registration) or low price. Usually both
can be done by sending SMS to some short number at least
in case of paid connection. May require local card but AFIK
PAYG works.

810 WiFi covered areas, for 45,000km2 totally
