It has been for at least a couple of weeks or so..... although the
prices (Depending on what "band" you are in) are slightly
off-putting....

I thought they were supposed to offer the same deals for upgrades as
they did for new customers now? At least there was a big hullaballoo
last year. Then O2 followed suit. Then it seems orange stopped doing that?

Yes... I'm sure Jon or the other Simon can explain it better... but...
Orange put their contract customers into one of 5 bands, which is
dependent on monthly spend, over a set period, (12 months ? ).
I'm not sure which order the bands are in (ie, not sure if 1 or 5 is
for lowest or highest spends), but basically, the band for the highest
monthly spend gets cheaper (or free) upgrade prices on handsets,
moving down to stupidly expensive if you are on the lowest spending
band.
As a band 3 customer, I was quoted 179.99 to upgrade to an N80,
whereas, someone on the highest spend band could have it for 49.99.
not sure on the other levels.
Other example prices (wihch may have changed slightly) for band 3:
N70: 99.99, Moto V3x: 49.99, SE W810i: 99.99, SPV c600: free. of
these, lower spending bands would have been closer to 150 or 200, and
I think the two "higher" bands were free.
I seem to recall last year that, yes, upgrades were done similar to
new customers, at least, based on my tariff, I was able to get a 6630
for free, same as a new customer on the same tariff.... I guess Orange
realised it was costing too much because of the subsidy against the
handsets.
One thing I have noticed though, is that some higher band customers
are, at upgrade, being offered better deals on their tariffs as well,
so getting similar minutes/textx as before but at a lower monthly
cost.... I wonder if this is a plan by Orange so that when these
people try to upgrade in 12 or 18 months time, they'll find themselves
on a lower tariff band and, as such, a higher cost on any handset they
wish to upgrade to.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if bands are calculated still on just
the, well, line rental charge a month, or does it take into account
everything else, such as, the fact that I spend a few quid on GPRS, a
few quid on an extra text message bundle, and always usually a few quid
more on going over my contract...
I mean, Im spending about £40 a month on average currently, and that's
even with half price line rental! In March, I had a bill for £86 after
sending 500 text messages!
Yet "Oh, Mr Dean, your upgrade price for an N80 is £229!"
Might use this opportunity to head over to O2... Anyone any news on N80
availability on the N80?
Thanks
Simon

It seems to could line rental and call spend, but ignores revenue from
incoming calls. I have one phone on VM OVP that costs about £1 per
month in outgoing calls, but typically took two hours of incoming
calls each day for several months.
Assuming a 5p per minute income from that, that's £120 per month, for
which Orange seem to give no consideration to in how they rate a
customer.

Re: I think I may bugger off to T-Mobile Web 'n Walk
Thanks for all the replies. Seems like the N80 is a pretty expensive
upgrade! What's the point in being a loyal customer these days.
I think I've finally decided that after 15+ years with Orange I'm gonna
leave 'em. I like the look of the forthcoming MDA Vario II (HTC Hermes) on
T-Mobile. T-Mobile's £7.50 unlimited(ish) Web 'n Walk deal is streets ahead
of anything Orange have in terms of value, and I'm predominantly a data
user.
I reckon Orange are gonna leak loads of customers soon, if they don't come
up with something to match Web 'n Walk in terms of a good value data tariff.
Cheers,
Fred.

I'm open to be told otherwise, but my understanding is the banding is
based on the total of your bills, so would include any bundles (data,
text etc) and also Orange Care.

Thats surprising, when were you quoted that price ? Based on what
you've said about your spending, I'd put you at worst on the same band
as myself, but most likely on a higher band, and therefore qualfying
for cheaper upgrade price, not more expensive...
That being said, when Orange (in store and over the phone) quoted me
180 to upgrade to the N80 it was May, and its possible the price may
have changed on June 1st, but I'd be surprised if the prices had gone
up by such a large margin.
I'd recommend going to an Orange shop, where at the very least they'll
be able to check which "band" you are in, and give you accurate
information on upgrade prices.
Just thinking about it though.... I assume you're within 1 or 2 months
(or already past) the minimum term on your current contract ? If not,
that may account for the higher price, as it'll include an "early
upgrade" fee as well as the charge for the handset.

Bill spend, 12 month rolling average. Length of time with Orange is also
included as are a number of other factors. Bill spend is the primary
variable in the calculation.

It's an expensive phone! Expansys have it £439.95.

They've only been in operation for just under 11 years.

Yes, they do have some catching up to do in that respect.

Data-only users represent very small sector of the market so I doubt
they are that worried, along with the other operators.

I was quoted that just under two weeks ago.

Golden question.
Who can tell though.
My contract was due to expire at the end of May. In March, Orange phoned
me up and ofered me six months half price line rental. Thought it was
just a "please stay with us past may". It turns out I was tied into a
contract until 1st October! Which I didn't want.
When I did phone up Orange to discuss getting rid of this fraudulent
contract, or paying off the remaining amount in order to get an early
upgrade, I was still quoted £229. Really stuck now with what to do.
But OSPS are offering the phone and tariff I want for a fraction of the
price. But I've heard a lot of bad things about OSPS recently.
Cheers

You can probably find out if there is an upgrade fee payable if you go
to Orange's website, go to upgrades and login for pricing details.
Unless they've changed the design of the page, there will be a box on
the right stating the upgrade fee which is in addition to any cost on
the handset itself. If you're still under contract to October, there
would most likely be a fee payable (maybe 100 or 150 quid ?)

I guess if you can afford to keep your current contract going until
October and pay for a new contract through OSPS (and cope with the
hassles of running 2 numbers and getting people to use the new one
instead of the old one), then go for it. Although if the new contract
would be through Orange, you could do some number porting.

£250! Even a Sony Ericcson W810i is down for me, at £149! Despite
regular phone bills of at least £40 a month (even with the half price
line rental).

I'd be looking to move back to O2. I have heard going with O2 on OSPS,
means using Carphone Warehouse as the service provider. Shudder.
