If you are trying to do it by card, yes. You also must have registered
your card details well in advance of a too-up attempt.
Your best bet would be to obtain a swipe card or an e-voucher and top up
that way. No security required.

Dunno why whenever I've spoken to a human at Orange I've always been
asked for my number.

If Orange have a minimum use condition there is a possibility that the
SIM you have may be inactive.
Instead of all this arsing about, as said previously, buy a SIM for £1
including P&P, when you register they give you £1 credit so it costs
you nothing.

Oh yes I can see how spending ages trying to find out a number for a
SIM with no credit that could very well be inactive is a much more
worthy pursuit than simply getting a SIM for £1 sent to you and
getting £1 credit when you register it.
Pray tell how does that put into peril my mortal soul?

Call through to 450 (free call).
Follow the options to top-up (option 1) and to activate reserve calls
(option 4? I think).
This gives you 2 emergency 30 second calls. Call a mobile, note the
Orange number, call Orange & top-up.
Er, simple! :-s
