I have a D800 and have text delivery reports enabled but receive nothing. I
am new to 02 and to the phone.
    SO,
    1. Does 02 support text delivery reports
    or
    2. Is my D800 not working correctly

    Thanks

Delivery reports on O2 are funny, instead of enabling them via your phone,
at the start of every message type *0# and that will give you a delivery
    report.
    Hope that helps

It's not that they're funny, it's that they're not directly supported.
The *0# combination is actually a GSM network code used for tracking
SMS delivery, a bit like a network ping, and nothing to do with O2
themselves. Can be useful if you need an accurate time of delivery,
as it gives more detailed information that the network acknowledgement
of delivery that you're used to.

Note, on Nokias you must have the option for delivery reports set to
Off for the code to work; not sure about other handset brands

I use a nokia 6230i and have delivery reports set to on and the *0# at the
start of the message works perfectly well.

Does anyone know if they have any plans to support the conventional
way? I've been with o2 for 6 months and its the only thing that REALLY
    bugs me about them.

Well they never used to. If you think about it, the delivery reports set to
'on' would send the alternative delivery report code at the start of the
message, so it would over-write your *0# that you had entered at the start
    of the message.

They've obvioulsy now configured things so the alternative delivery code at
    the start is ignored.

It saves them bandwidth. If you want a delivery report, you really have to
think about it. Most people I know on orange leave the setting on all the
time, think of the extra messages required to inform people of delivered,
    etc.

I recall several years ago someone who appeared to be 'in the know' said
they were going to, but it hasn't happened. And I don't really see that
    changing.

Dunno about other phones, but the Nokias I use handle standard delivery
reports in a very poor way. I sent some text messages to a friend in
Ghana via T-Mobile. A few days later I had lots of messages back saying
they were undelivered and listing his number. But no indication of
which messages weren't delivered. At least using *0# on O2 I get the
first few words of my original message in the delivery report.

So what? They go down the control channel when it has nothing better
    to do.

It used to be random back in the day! They may have fixed that now.

If it was going to do them any good, they would enable it, wouldn't they.

It is a pity that the phone manufacturers don't build in a facility to
auto send the code along with the message or, alternatively, to paste
it in automatically, at the beginning of the message text, when set to
    do so.

Well, there is a mechanism built into the GSM specs for delivery
reports, so I suppose manufacturers have built that facility in already.

Some phones have an editable list of pre-set templates. You may be able
to use one of them for sending message beginning with *0#.
