    Hi,

Does anyone know if there are better rates out there for 3G data than
Orange's £4 for 4MB? Also, does this bundle include full internet access or
are there any restrictions? The Orange price guide is of course pretty much
    useless.

    Thanks

Yes, but it depends on your pattern of use.

In fairness to Orange, it is not restricted. If you use the standard
orangeinternet APN, there is a downsamplimg proxy built in to reduce
the data volume, which is useful for general browsing. This APN seems
    to block VPN connections, though.

If you use the office APN, you can use VPN and there is no
downsamplimg proxy, so it's good if you want to browse full quality
images. I don't know if there are restrictions on access to this APN,
but I don't think there are.

With 3G, if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it ;-)

Given that 3G can manage 384Kb/sec down and 64Kb/sec up, if it runs at
full tilt, you will transfer 4 MB in less than a minute and a half.
That leaves you with a lot of month and no data allowance!

Yes, there are better options, but you've not given enough
information. How much will you use it? Will it be a lot one day, none
for other days, or will your use be spread out over the month?

If i had an unlimited data allowance, i would listen to internet radios,
watch streaming vidéos, find my way out of strange city using Google Map,
control my desktop PC with VNC, chat with my friends on IM during those
longs hours in the bus... Unfortunately, i do not know whether or not i'm
gonna be there in the UK over the next 12 months. So i'm pretty much stuck
with PAYG and these Middle ages data tariffs. So that's gonna be a bit of
web browsing and a bit of emails i suppose.

    Thanks for the info.

On top of what i've said above, i think that it's gonna be more occasional
than regular use. The Orange £1 for a day of unlimited data sounds cool but
it seems that it doesn't include 3G or that there are some funny
    restrictions.

If you have a 3G PAYG sim, it does include 3G, but then it is limited
    to 25MB per day.

Alternatively, the T-Mobile equivalent is either 2G or 3G without that
limit, but there are other restrictions (which I've forgotten, I'm
    afraid).

Since you've mentionned T-Mobile, i've been to their web site and found
    their Internet Bundles
    <http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=phones_internet_bundles>

Looks pretty good to me, better for me than the Orange offering but they do
not say anything about how you can use these bundles, no terms &
conditions, nothing. So does anyone knows whether these can be used with a
PAYG T-Mobile SIM card? Is it full Internet access? If i get a PAYG SIM
from their web site, will it be a 3G enabled SIM (doesn't say either).
Mobile phone operators web sites are so bad, it's frustrating.

That's not what I had in mind. I was thinking of the PAYG one where
your GPRS is charge is limited to 75p per day. No need to set it up:
    it is all automatic.

I'm afraid I don't know where you can find details. As you say, the
mobile company websites are a nightmare to find information on.

I had never heard about this one. Sounds interesting so i went back to the
T-Mobile web site but couldn't find anything about that. All that i've
found about internet and PAYG is some "WAP access" charged at an
outrageously high price in their brochures. Oh well, i guess i'll have to
give them a ring then, although i doubt that the bored student answering
the phone will have any clue about 3G and Internet access on PAYG.

Thanks for all the info anyway, it was of great help.

T- Mobile PAYG will do a £1 per day max as from August. No need to set
    it up.

    Found it! It's there:
I had to click on the tiny "About T-Mobile" link at the very bottom of the
page, then Press Office, then "T-Mobile launches £1 a day mobile internet
with web’n’walk™ available on pay as you go" on the right side. That was
all obvious. Anyway, that's great news, exactly what i was looking for.
Good timing too. Goodbye Virgin Mobile then.

Hmmmmm.... sure? "A fair use policy applies" whatever that means

You are only supposed to use the phone's browser. No PC connection etc.
That, of course, limits the amount of data you can shift!

Yes, pretty sure unless their "fair use policy" means access to web sites
on port 80 only but given that their Web'n walk allows full internet access
as far as i know (except streaming i think), i wouldn't worry too much. I
suppose that this "fair use policy" is there to prevent people from leaving
a video streaming application running 24/7 on their phone or spending their
time downloading and uploading on P2P newtorks. These limitation wouldn't
bother me personnaly. But let's wait and see in August.

That was too good to be true. I forgot one "detail": coverage. T-Mobile do
not have 3G coverage at all where i live :-( Really pissed off. That'll be
    Orange then.
