I'm sick of smartphones. I've had quite a few HTC devices and they
work so badly as phones. I've been using a Nokia 6230i and the only
thing I miss is the Windows Mobile "Today" screen that shows your next
calendar appointment on the standby screen. Without this I tend to
forget what's coming up in the calendar until the alert goes off.

Is there any "dumbphone" that does this?

    Cheers,
    Steph

I use an SPV-C550 day in day out with no issues. I've also just been
kind of forced into a Nokia N80 for work which also seems to have this
functionality. There are no non-smartphones I can think of off the top
of my head which do what you want, hence your lack of replies :-)

Any Nokia Symbian phone. They're technically smartphones, but they're
not nearly as "smart" as Pocket PC. This, IMHO, is a good thing - less
    to go wrong!

I also gave up the smartphone/pda thing. It's a flawed technology
imho. Have a separate pda if you really need one, like a palm or
    similar.

I was listening to a podcast the other day where they were discussing
calendaring and how there is currently no easy way to synchronise
online, desktop, mobile calendars with the ability to make them public
    or private, etc, etc.

I couldn't help thinking these people must be incredibly busy and/or
important to event want such capability never mind actually need it.

I get by with outlook on my laptop at home sync'd to a basic calendar
    in my phone.

    Thanks for all the answers.

Sounds like a Nokia S60 is the closest thing to what I want...

Just to add to this, Nokia S40 3rd Edition has a today screen which is
    inactive by default.

However, I see in another thread you were asking about phones on Orange
    - and Orange in their wisdom have disabled this in my Orange branded
    6280. (It worked on a non-O branded 6280 I tested). It's also on the
6233, but I haven't seen the Orange variant of that yet, only the
    generic version.

Interesting. That could be the better option.

Anyone know if the 6233 can be debranded..?

Orange shops first couple of deliveries of 6233's are generic,
unbranded stock. I know in my store, we still have plenty left
(Belfast). Why don't you try your closest one? You'll know straight
away as it will be in a white Nokia box as apposed to the usual black
    Orange box.

    HTH,
    Chris

Interesting. I like the look of the white exclusive-to-Orange one.
Are the generic ones you've got white or black?

I could upgrade through a shop but I think I'll have to do it over the
phone because this time I want a decent retention tarriff. Last time I
upgraded through a shop the guy told me that while retentions can offer
hundreds of special tariffs, the shop could only offer the standard
ones plus a couple of others.

Had to do the shop upgrade anyway as my phone was faulty and I needed a
new one then and there but I've paid out many £££ in line rental
unnecessarily over the course of the year...

Black unfortunately. White hasn't launched yet, I'm guessing since
it's an Orange exclusive they'll have had time to get the boxes and the
    customisation sorted for it.

Shop tariffs aren't half bad at the minute to be fair, £35 getting you
500xnet mins and unlimited texts + free broadband (if you want it) on
an 18 month contract. Others available listed here:

The only thing I'd be wary of is checking that CS know you're after an
unbranded one (I'm not even sure if they'd be able to tell when they
allocate it on the system). The branded versions of the 6233 have
possibly launched by now, so you don't want to get stuck with one by
    accident

    Good luck,
    Chris
