Yes I know its a long shot, but it is mobile related.

For years now I have a Turkish SIM card that i use in my UK mobile when I go
to Turkey 2-3 times a year.

Now there have been mutterings for the last year or so that the Turkish
Authorities want to crack down on stolen mobiles by barring all mobile IMEI
number now refistered in Turkey, but nothing had happened when I was there
in May, and nobody knew anything about it.

Now I have had texts of Turkish friends today saying that the UK phones that
i have sold / given people in turkey were all barreda s of today 1st August.

So does anyone in the know, or is Turkish know what si really happening. Is
it still possible to still register a UK mobile phone in Turkey.

    Cheers

Were the handsets you sold/gave stolen?

One of two things is happening, either Turkish networks are blacklisting
all non-Turkish IMEIs (if that's even possible) or they have signed up
    to the CEIR blacklist.

Apparently Turkish networks are barring certain phones bought from
abroad when used with Turkish sims -apparently it doesn't affect UK
    phone users roaming in Turkey.

I read on xda-developers.com recently that people in Turkey who have
legitimately bought phones abroad are having to go through some
convoluted procedure to prove ownership before being able to get them
unbarred - apparently it's extremely difficult to prove ownership if
they've just bought them (albeit perfectly legitimately) on ebay.

No they were my old pre-upgrade phones. I have valid invoices for them. they
are not barred in the UK

Yes it is possible - they have just started. in fact i have today found the
Turk Telekom site that allows you to check if the IMEI number is blocked or
    not.

    or they have signed up

    No see above

Yes you are right Simon. The Turkisk Telecom office has been threatening to
do this for the last 18 months. the last time I was in Turkey in May,
everyone told me they had given up on the idea, including the phone
networks, and there was no reason to register your phone anymore.

Now yesterday it all kicked in !!!!!!

The phones I gave to friends were legit non barred phones that are now
    useless in Turkey :-(

I live in Turkey and have just gone through the procedure of
    registering a new phone.

It is correct that unregistered phones will be barred, however,
registering is not too painful, if you have an invoice! Without an
    invoice, forget it!!

If the phone cost over 300 Euros you will have to pay tax when it is
brought into the country (10% of the total cost). This is done at the
customs point in the luggage collection area (it is in Istanbul
anyway). If it's less than 300 euros they will take the details and
mark your passport to show that you imported a phone. They then return
your invoice showing an official customs stamp. This invoice then
needs to be taken to one of the main offices of one of the mobile phone
companies (Turkcell in my case). They then register the phone and
    everything is OK.

If you use a non-Turkish sim in an imported phone it is not neccesary
to register as it will not get barred.

Be careful about getting an invoice showing a value a lot lower than
the actual cost of the phone (in an attempt to avoid the tax) as the
customs people have a list of phone guide prices that they consult. I
imported an E61 from Dubai and paid no tax; it cost 283 Euros. In
Turkey it's almost double that price!

    hi John

OK so can i check this out with you, as I am going to Turkey in mid
    September.

I have a real cheapo motorola cost me £10 in the UK, and I have a Carphone
Warehouse invoice with the IMEI number on it.

So if I declare the phone at the airport, and get the invoice stamped, then
I can go to a main Avea (in my case) phone shop, pay my 5YTL and get it
    unbarred.

Is it really that simple? or am I going to have more problems????

    cheers

But, what about all these 'free' phones that folks get? How would you get
    round that?

Sounds like that maybe difficult. I guess it depends on the value.

If you still have an invoice with the make model and IMEI number on it, but
a £0.00 value, sounds like Turkish customs will estimate a value. If its
over ?300 than you pay 10% of their estimated value.

Then again maybe I am wrong !!!

It should be that simple, but as you may know, some "simple" things are
    not so simple in Turkey!

Have a look at this link

    http://www.tk.gov.tr/Basin_Duyurular...b_08_03_06.pdf

It gives all the regulations but it's in Turkish. I hope it helps.

Does Turkey still want to join the EU? This kind of crap will cost it
my vote. I expect this of places like China and N Korea. How are they
going to get away with the tax on the handsets if they are allowed to
join the single market? What a mess.

It does just really sound like a way to force foreign roaming and
prevent local competition, while claiming extra taxes from tourists.
As you say, Turkey has no place in the EU while they carry on in this
    way.
