I signed up to the Orange Student Tariff in August 2005 on Talk 120 with
    1000 free Text Messages.

I was told at the time that I was being put on to a four year contract, but
I was entitled to 4 phone upgrades each year, and could take 12 months
    payment break.

I have recently enquired about upgrading my phone and they have told me that
I am on an 18th month contract and need to wait until November for my
upgrade fee to become zero (more on this later)

So im confused now, whether im on a 4 year contract or, 18 month contract,
does anyone know if orange has ever done 4 year contracts of this nature?

What does your contract say? A copy of which orange sent you/gave you,
when you initially took out your contract.

Do you mean a four year contract with four upgrades i.e. one per year?

Not taking Law as a subject then?

It's not a four year contract in the sense that you are bound to a 4
year minimum term, but rather that Orange is bound only to provide you
with the student offer benefits for 4 years - i.e. the free text
messages, etc. The discounted portion of the tariff will be removed 4
years from the date of connection and you revert to a standard tariff.

Obviously you've been scammed into an 18 month contract though so if
you wanted to cancel or upgrade then you'd either have to pay off 6
months at your monthly rate or the upgrade fee.

The upgrade sheet says 4 year contract, T120, 100 free texts student deal.

The girl in the shop said I would be entitled to upgrades every year

contrary to what ive recently been told

One of the many lessons in life, which a university can't teach you - NEVER
believe a sales person. They lie most of the time to earn a living. Never
buy phone insurance either unless you plan to use it as a cheap way of
upgrading or are extremely careless/stupid/thick. It is so easy to be
conned, always take time to read a contract - never sign anything straight
away and if a shop says the offer is only on "today" then walk away.
You would have been better buying a contract from 3 for 15 a month over
18months. None of that silly cashback deal rubbish either, just 600 mins
for 6months then down to 300, but with a massive amount of texts. It
depends what you want a phone for. Is it to flash about or to keep in
touch? Orange is probably a lot more expensive than some other companies
that provide exactly the same service.

I am trying to find out if this orange student tariff compares with
o2's 300 free text per month?

Can anyone confirm what is the best payg/contract tariff?

My Daughter took out a Student Package in July 2005

It was an ordinary 12 Month contract at £25 per month.

As she was a student she had an extra 1000 texts per month added Free.
The terms were that you could have the free student package for up to 4
years and that you could take a year off if you wanted (if you were doing a
    gap year).

You could upgrade at the end of each year if you wished and continue the
    contract.

When the 12 months came around she would have been able to upgrade (the best
FREE upgrade offered was to the same handset as she already had).

She wanted to upgrade her talkplan for more minutes but was told that the
talkplan that she was on was the most expensive she could have WITH the
    student package.

She was better off cancelling the student plan and went on to the £45
panther (18 Month) with extra 3g minutes (N80).

The only drawback seems to be that the new Animal Packages charge 1p for a
text REPORT, which as the package includes 1100 texts could add another
    £11.00 per month.

I suspect that you inadvertantly signed up for an 18 month contract instead
of a 12 month but if they mentioned 4 phone upgrades (which would certainly
NOT have been EVERY year), but over the 4 year period of the student package
then this would indicate that you have a 12 month contract. Have a read of
the paperwork, get your facts straight, then if the contract is misleading
take them to task on it.

I did with a mistake that they made on the original contract for my daughter
and managed to get an extra £50 credit adding to the account.

I think I wasn't told the full truth in the shop, but I should have been
told it was a 18 month contract not a 4 year one, like they said.

Orange said I will be able to upgrade in Month 15 of my contract FoC, does
this ring true of 18 month contracts?

Ill make sure that ill be put on 12 month contract in future, if I can?

PAYG starts looking attractive thought, if they are going start misleading
me, I wont get a new phone although that's not the end of the world.

Sounds very much that the student contract is no better than a normal
    contract.
If you took out a standard 12 month contract you can have a new phone
after every 12 months too. As long as you keep paying the contract
    price.

The four year deal just gives you extra texts as a way of keeping you
    for the four years.
Seems a pretty poor deal which can easily be betted bhy shopping around
every 12 months. And doing money saving things like using cash back
deals and affiliate bonuses (line mypocket, quidco, greasy palm)

Looks like the OP should have been on the 12 month rather than 18 month
    contract.

Then again students are a lot richer (or have more access to money)
    than my day.

I dissagree with that, I couldnt have got 100 + free texts at the time, and
still cant now, except on 02 100 which is exacly the same monthly charge so
    was no point.

Even if thats on 18month Dolphin @ £25

Can you point to me a tarrif that is 12 months, 100 text, 100 Mins for less
    than £25?

    Vodaphone 125 mins, 250 texts, £20 a month.

Or for 25 quid a month Relax 25 from T-Mobile direct, normally 150mins and
100 texts, but on special offer at the moment, 150mins and 600 texts...
