Do you know if it's possible for me to call someone (e.g. my employer)
and alter my voice
'John can come in today. He's ill....'
I don't have any fancy equipment... any ideas?

Here's an idea: don't post your intention to defraud your employer with your
real name attached?

Buy a voice changer as used in Scream. Practice saying "what's your
favourite scary movie?".
Try holding a pencil between your nose and your top lip while you speak. It
may not disguise your voice much, but will give anyone watching you a good
laugh.
Or simply adopt an accent and voice pitch different from your own. Invent a
detailed personal history (favourite foods, children or pets' names, job
etc.) for the person you are pretending to be so that, if questioned, you
can maintain the illusion.

I presume you have no friends then, who could do this for you?
When you phone your 'ex' from the pretend 'train station' ask him/her
to do it for you.

Try keeping your upper and lower jaw (teeth) together as you speak; that
does change your voice a bit especially stops it wavering if you're under
stress. Don't have to do mad sharkbite clenching just keep them together.
