Hi all,
I have an O2 pay n go sim in my mobile. I've had it for quite a few
years as i dont really make all that many phone calls. I am away in
the usa for about a month and wondered what my cheapest options are
for roaming?
thanks

Depends on your calling pattern. Will you be making local calls in the US
or calling back to the UK..? For local calls, get a T-Mobile PAYG SIM
there, for calls back to the UK use the same SIM in conjunction with a
calling card.

There was a recent discussion about this you may find useful. Go to Google
Groups and type in 'Orange Phone in the USA' - it's the first result.

They are useful for other countries, but in USA the tariffs are much
higher, around 50p a minute, so I too would suggest a local SIM and
calling card

It's another cheap calls account, that can be used away from home.
You'd dial an access number, either freephone or ordinary area code.
Either you then enter your account or PIN number when prompted, or the
system recognises your phone number you set up earlier (this is not
always available). Then another prompt, and you dial the destination
number.
There are loads of calling cards in USA, and a typical rate for calling
UK is 2 cents per minute. Using this from a mobile, you'd call the
access number at the mobile tariff, about 10 to 20 cents, then your
calling card account is separately charged from the credit balance

Thanks all for replies-ill have a think. I must say that despite the
recent EU actions, roaming charges for the big providers are still
scandalous..

Others have given good advice regards call charges.
However, you say your handset is quite a few years old. Which handset is it
? It may or may not work in the US.

Re: Best option? O2 PAYG roaming in USA
As others said, assuming your phone has the 1900 band and it's unlocked,
get a tmobile payg sim card. They are very cheap on ebay. You can get
them with about 150 local minutes for less than $10 including local
shipping. They'll probably ship to UK for a little more. Also, tmobile
is still the only prepaid carrier that does not charge extra for
international SMS ($0.10), so you can save some money by using SMS.
Also, once you top it up wiuth $100, you automatically get 1 year
expiration, and get 15% more on any topup. Any additional topup (even
$10) extends the life of the sim for another year.
You definitely do not want to roam on O2 for a whole month!

- and not actually cheaper from callboxes either, as FCC regulations
provide that the callbox provider gets paid too, usually as a lump sum
per call of maybe 50c or so.
