You might well ask! They supplied my wife and myself with a shiny new
handset each a few months ago - and we're both on the OVP Virgin tariff and
    only use our phones occasionally.

I have a feeling that they might have woken up to this in the meantime, and
blocked further upgrades of this type.

Ask yourself this question: if Orange supply your wife with a shiny new
handset what have they to gain?

No, but she can buy any subsidised Orange PAYG handset and when she
phones to activate her "upgrade" she will be given a whole £1 talk
    credit!

They blocked this pretty quickly. I got one 'upgrade' too. Sadly my
second OVP Virgin account was in the same My Orange account, and I
couldn't find a way of upgrading the second account.

Still, got a K700i which immediately went on ebay.

Actually she won't and she may well be entitled to a reward credit. This
will depend on her level of top ups over the past 6 months.

With respect, the very excistence of this group relies on people
    "wanting new phones"

No, the very existence of the networks relies on it, given that they
subsidise the things up to the hilt. There will always be people
interested in discussing phones without wanting to continually "upgrade"
every 5 minutes, hence this group will survive. I've had my three Nokia
6310i's (two in daily use and one boxed new for a spare in case of
failure) for at least as many years and have no plans to change.

No, that's nothing like the truth.
