I heard that to text a mobile in canada you had to put some extra
numbers in before the telephone number which was different to the
international dailing code when simply calling, can anyone help?.
    Thank you

I have to say I've not heard of that, I just use the usual +1 for
USA/Canada, all my UK numbers are in my phone book as +44.......
(without the 0), saves messing about when roaming.

Personally, I've never been able to text the usa despite trying several
    times (on orange)

Which networks? It'll probably only work to T-Mobile or Cingular, and
even then probably only certain markets.

Can those in the US text you?

I know that it works from Orange to Cingular and vice versa. And I've
also done Cingular to Voda, and (I _think_) O2.

Depends on the network. Some of the various flavours of US systems don't
handle text. It's not a big thing over there the way it is here.

But it is growing in popularity. All the big carriers support it, but a
lot of the networks are CDMA. Clearly AMPS doesn't support SMS, I'm not
too certain about TDMA, although a number of TDMA providers are
converting the TDMA towers to GSM.

Another point to note is that most of the networks charge for incoming
text messages. Although that said, many do unlimited text bundles for a
    reasonable monthly charge.

Indeed they seem to prefer push to talk over text, when I asked my
American friend as to why he liked PTT, his reply was 'because I'm
    lazy'. ;-)

    Does he use Nextel?

Is it just Orange who does PTT over here? I don't actually know anyone
    using it here at all.

You don't see so many people tapping the keys on their phone like you do
    over here.

I sent a bunch when I was last over there (when roaming) - fortunately
using GPRS though rather than paying orange 40p a pop.

Yep with some horrid Motorola handset.

Yep just Orange AFAIK, however you can't sign up for it anymore and it
will only be available to business customers from 01/11/06.

Pretty sure it's down to pricing, my friends Nextel plan includes
unlimited PTT usage, don't see Orange or any of the other operators
    over here doing it.

Seems a shame as I have a dedicated PTT key on my handset that I'll
    never use.

I think Orange do, but only on PAYT.

For me at least, the only thing that makes post pay plans worthwhile is
me switching every year and taking advantage of cash back offers.

    They do

"Talk Now will cost you 20p for each 30 minute session or part of it.
However, you will never be charged more than £1 a day on Talk Now in the
UK. Once you've used up 5 sessions, the rest are free for the day!

If you are a new user to Talk Now you can get the first three months
free, just ask for the Talk Now bundle when you call 450 to get Talk Now
    set up."

The Pay Monthly one costs 15p a minute!

    From O's website:

    Pay As You Go customers

Talk Now will cost you 20p for each 30 minute session or part of it.
However, you will never be charged more than £1 a day on Talk Now in
the UK. Once you've used up 5 sessions, the rest are free for the day!

free, just ask for the Talk Now bundle when you call 450 to get Talk
    Now set up.

    Pay Monthly customers

When you use Talk Now to talk to one other person it costs 15p a
minute. When you talk to between two and nine others it costs 30p per
    minute.

    >For me at least, the only thing that makes post pay plans worthwhile is
    >me switching every year and taking advantage of cash back offers.

Indeed, seems to be going this way, decent retention offers seem few
    and far between.
