A few weeks ago my mothers phone suddenly turned to 'limited service.' I
took out the SIM card cleaned it, put it back it and it went back to normal
    for about 5 minutes.

I tried putting my SIM card in and it works fine, however I've also put my
mothers SIM in my phone and it works fine. Just seems to not want to work
together. However, when I put my mother SIM back into her own phone it
started to work for about 24hours and again... went back to limited service.
Phoned Orange.... very unhelpful as per usual saying it was the phone's
fault, although I told them every other SIM card works fine in the handset.

I took it to my local Orange shop on Saturday and when I was explaining the
problem to the shop assistant, another assistant who overheard said I was
like the third person who'd come in with the same problem. The sale
assistant refused to take any further action as my mum (the PAYG account
holder) wasn't present, although I had all the correct verification details
and could've phoned her for them to speak to etc...

anyway... the SAME thing has happened to my brother's in the past few days
    PAYG phone.

    Anyone else had this problem?

Why didn't you ask what the fault was and how they resolved it if three
others had experienced the same thing?
If you left your SIM card in the phone for more than 24hours and it worked
then that is very odd, especially as you put the suspect card in your phone
for more than 24hours and it worked fine.
It's probably more to do with her account or reception.

I am having a similar problem at the moment.

My mobile broke so I bought a new one yesterday from an Orange store,
and put my Orange SIM in, and it worked fine until this morning, when it
started to say 'limited service' even on full signal. I hope it's not an
issue of compatibility between phone and SIM 'cause the phone wasn't
cheap and I don't want to switch numbers again.

If you are on PAYG, you should register the new SIM card (asking to keep
your old number) and you will get some free money as an upgrade reward.

If you got the phone from an Orange Retail shop I would be very suprised
if they let it go out of the door unregistered.
