A friend has returned from Japan with a Sharp 705SH mobile phone. Is it
possible to use this phone in the UK. If so will it need unlocked?

Re: Sharp 705SH
Yes it should work on any network (inc. '3'), it will need to be
unlocked (if not already).

Well its a GSM 3G phone so in theory yes it can be used here.
Easy way is to insert a UK SIM card and see if it works.
If it is networked locked, not sure if it can be unlocked....

All Japanese 3G phones are supplied locked - the Sharp to Vodafone (now
Softbank) Japan - and it's now been declared illegal to unlock phones there
(and networks don't supply unlocking code).
You will find it difficult to get it unlocked over here.

Re: Sharp 705SH
Does that mean it is simply locked to vodafone?
Does that mean I could use a uk vodafone sim with the phone.

No. UK Vodafone and former Vodafone Japan (now Softbank) have separate
identities and sim cards aren't interchangeable (like Orange UK and Orange
France (France Telecom), T-Mobile UK with T-M US and Germany).
