Email Notification

Hello All, I hope you can help.

I currently have a contract with Orange and am thinking of switching
providers. I use email a lot and find it extremely handy to receive SMS
notification from my Orange email address whenever I get new mail however
recently this function has been eratic at best and sometimes non existant
hence my desire to change providers.

I've been looking around and all the other providers seem to offer this
service but will charge 12p for the notification text whereas this service
is free on Orange. I did read on Vodafones site that they now have an icon
which apears on the phone when a message is received but when I rang their
helpdesk to get them to elaberate on this further, ie does it give a summary
of the sender and the subject, I was told it didn't exist!

Does anyone out there use this function and can let me know how it works?
Alternatively does anyone know of another way, perhaps through a thrid party
email/webmail, that I can use to get a free email notification if I change
suppliers?

I used to use Orange text alerts also - however I stopped when I
realised that if attachments were over a certain size the email was
simply returned to the sender!

I now use T-mobile Web'n'Walk instead (£7.50 per month for 1gig of
data) and simply get the phone to check every 5 mins for email.

Hi Simon,

Funnily enough I was experimenting with this earlier and it seams to work ok
(though my phone - a C600 - will only check every 15 minutes at the most).
The only problem I foresee is that on Orange with their temperamental mail
system it is quite often unable to log into the POP server though I guess if
I'm going to another provider this shouldn't come into play. Also I'm unsure
how much data will be used even if I'm only downloading headers.

Downloading headers used about 2k per header IIRC

I tested out push email, but it used about 2 meg per day - at the time
I was on the original Web'n'Walk - 40 meg per month. Of course, with
the new Web'n'Walk, it wouldn't be a problem.

I now use clara.net permanent trial for my pop3 email, as I was fed up
with Orange returning my emails with attachments to sender.

I've been hoping for something like this for years!

When I bought my first ever mobile (Virgin) I was impressed to see that
I could set up a Virgin email account and get email notifications as txt
msgs - great! I just set up my normal email account to forward to my
Virgin account and got used to the convenience of it.

Then Virgin withdrew the service. I discovered that Orange offered the
same (even if you didn't have an Orange phone!) so I used that for a
while. Then they withdrew the service from non-Orange phones.

Since then I have been keeping a look out for something similar but to
no avail.

I now have a frustrated RAZR V3 with all the email settings empty
because I'm terrified of the cost of downloading emails!

Any advice anyone?

Is it though? I'm a pay-as-you-go skinflint albeit a direct-debit one
and Virgin rarely take more than £10-£12 out of my account. I'm not a
heavy caller or txter.

Anyone prepared to hazard a guess at how much my bill would increase by
if I configured the email settings in the phone? Lets say I set it to
check hourly and I received about 3 or 4 emails per day...

With or without attachments?

Couple of paragraphs of plain text say 3-4Kb? So allowing a generous bit
for overheads say 50Kb per day? over 30 days 1.5Mb per month. What do
virgin charge per Mb? There's your rough answer.

OK, the Virgin website says:

3G or GPRS3 0.5p per Kb

So I make that 50 x 0.5 x 30 = £7.50

Not bad. I might jut give it a try. I'll exclude attachments. I presume
that the phone will only start downloading mail received after I set it
up. I don't want it to suddenly start downloading all my current
emails!?

It will only download whats on the server, not ones which are already on
your PC (assuming you're using POP3 and not IMAP).

Ah, that might be a problem as I don't delete important stuff from the
server when I download to my PC. Perhaps I could set the max d'load
size really low initially. Anyway, I'll have to decide and give it a
try. Thanks for you help.
