I'm due an upgrade with O2. I currently have the XDA mini S which I'm not a
big fan of. It is terribly slow. It takes ages to get a word doc up, even a
txt one, or to start the camera program etc.Not overly keen on the slide out
keyboard either - prefer the SE flip one.
Ideally I wanted the SE990i but it seems to be a bit of a lemon so can
anyone recommend a good new smart phone. I use the
PDA more than I do the actual phone so must have all the usual office
/internet features and a camera. I don't like blackberry - they seem quite
bulky and I don't want to pay a regular subscription for email and internet
access. I also want to keep to O2 if possible but that's not essential
    Thanks

I've had a Nokia E61 for the past 3 months - first 'real' smartphone.

Love it - don't get me wrong it's not perfect and it's missing a camera
    - which I don't mind. It also doesn't have a radio - which I would have
    liked.

Great screen, keyboard and battery life. If you can handle the size then
    it's worth a look.

And if you can manage setting up an exchange 2003 server, you can have push
email for only the charge of the data. To be honest though, if you fancy
doing anything which involves data, it seems t-mobile is the only real game
    in town...

I have had my e61 a week or so now, and it is set up for "push email", seems
to work quite well, the phone is quick, the battery life is truly
exceptional, especially compared to my previous xda2 and the xda exec.

It runs tom tom, but it doesnt have the smoothness of the xda, but the
configuration is pretty much non existant - ie, you install the application,
make sure the bluetooth gps is switched on, and that was it!!!!

I agree the E61 is very nice. I considered it when I recently upgraded from
an xda II. However, I went for the Nokia E70 (the one with the fold-out
keyboard) instead because it has all the same features, plus a higher
resolution screen and a camera, and it's easier to use one-handed.

So far I'm happy with it. I miss having a touch-sensitive screen but I'm
getting used to it. It's a lot more stable (the xda used to crash often and
needed rebooting every day). The screen and camera are a lot better than the
xda. It doesn't come with as many free extras (e.g. dictionaries) but you
    can buy them.

[Disclaimer: I work for Symbian, which is how I got to know about the E70]

    Dear Phil
How does the e70 compare to the 9300i I have a 9300 and love symbian for the stability and having previously had psion's. Would I be able to make a transfer of software/data from 9300 to eseries - they are s60's aren't they?

I would recommend the 9300 into the smartphone debate - but I think keyboards are the way to go - no pointy things that get lost for me
