As my boss said when a particularly attractive Detective Constable visited
my office, "She can arrest me any time..!"

Well yes, but who would she put you in a cell with..?!

Getting rarer by the minute, they're painting double red lines all over
    the place around here now.

That's because it uses an external aerial, how many car kits do you see
with this now..? How many phones have a connector..?

If you DO stop on the MWay hard shoulder, put the bonnet up as if you've got
an engine fault before you use your mobbly. Then, if Plod does stop, you are
    just phoning for help.

Or get done for making a dangerous situation worse - if the car is struck
then the bonnet becomes a projectile and can end up pretty much anywhere,
including through the windscreen of a car on the opposite carriageway.

The best bet is to be sensible and not stop on the hard shoulder unless you
absolutely have to because your car won`t get you off at the next junction.
People get killed when their vehicles get struck while stationary on the
hard shoulder - I can provide links of a story on the BBC website of a fatal
accident that included 3 people - one woman who died, one guy who I have
since met and another guy who is going to be joining me in work eventually,
once he is well enough to return (the accident happened almost a year ago
now). It`s really a VERY messy thing to have to clean up, please don`t stop
on the HS and use your phone.

I`ll take this to email, as I`d MUCh rather not discuss this in a public
    forum :-)

Actually, i agree with you 100%. The "bonnet up" trick is a typical one
adopted by Plod when cought short and wishes to use adjacent bushes, on the
    other side of the ARMCO.....

Nope, it ONLY covers UK mobile phones.

It doesn't cover handheld radios, TETRA radios, or even AirWAVE Radio
    Phones.

No, he doesn't. GSM handoffs should not cause any gaps at all. TACS
lost a few milliseconds, but that was long ago.

Even lost data packets don't cause gaps: they just add distortion
    because of interleaving.
