If your phone is turned on and connected to the service, they *know* more or
less where you are 'cos they know which masts are picking up your signal.
Using an old handset would make no difference.

Why not just pay HSBC their 700 quid - then you won't have to worry?! I
doubt whether anybody here will encourage you to be dishonest.

Surely one way around it would be to purchase a new PAYG phone with cash
    - they'll be able to trace the phone, but they won't know who it belongs
    to.

Then pay the money that you've stolen back, or argue it in court. If
you're truly right, then you've got nothing to fear.

hang on, aren`t you trying to steal from HSBC by avoiding paying them the
money that you owe them? Hardly the actions of decent hardworking people
    surely?

If they are unlawful then challenge them. Then learn how to manage your
money - how can anyone be stupid enough to run up this level of debt from
charges? Why didn`t you get an overdraft authorised, to give you a bit of
leeway incase you get your sums wrong? That`s why I`ve got a £5k overdraft
limit, to make sure that if a bill comes out early I won`t go over any limit
that will cost me money - I notice and transfer the cash into my current
    account the same day.

    > Get off your high horse or shut up if you have no useful advice.

Perhaps if you wheren`t trying to steal then people might want to help you.

So you can pay back £120 a year by getting rid of the phone - and
perhaps if you find an alternative cheaper way to travel abroad, you can
pay back more of what you owe.

If the charges were "illegal" - for which the financial services
authority (?) have now set a limit of a £12 charge - you can claim back
    all the excess charges.

You have nothing to lose as you're abroad 70% of the time, so it won't
be an issue if they close your account (which they have been known to
do, much to the chagrin of the FSA etc.)

In that case challenge them in court - or complain to the banking Ombudsman.
That's better than trying to hide from them.

If charges are unlawful then they are unlawful. The reasons behind them

If not paying someone what you owe them was considered stealing, then I
suggest we may need quite a few more prisons. Then we can start to populate
them with the worst offenders, those that go under for millions of pounds of
    other peoples money.

Yes, debtors prisons. Why stop there, how about re-introducing the
birch, village stocks and the ducking stool.

Yes..... I forgot that no matter how outrageous one tries to be on here,

As to "So what's the problem?".... I can't even be bothered to start

As I said, unwilling to listen to anybody else's view anyway but at
least you are open about the fact. The sentence sounds about right to
me. He only got paint on your car and presumably you weren't injured as
    a result.

I'm sorry but I can't take anyone seriously when they say the
re-introduction of hanging and flogging would be "a start". The mind
boggles as to what ultimate end you would have in mind.
