French Mobicarte?

A bit off topic but could someone tell me if I still need a passport for
post purchase international dialling activation of French SIMs (specifically
Mobicarte)?

Actually is it possible to buy a payg SIM in France without a passport?

They all ask for ID (piece d'identie) so you might manage a driver's
licence or library card. Swift glance then onto the photocopier and
back into your hot little hands. I didn't notice any deep
cross-referencing of the ID's photo with my visage.
