Hmm. I've been riding for almost 25 years and have never had an accident.
I only fell off once and that was when a suicidal car driver passed me
with 6 inches to spare at about 40mph (in a 30 limit) while I was
stationary at the side of the road trying to decide which way I needed to
go.

Doubtless there are a number of sensible bikers, unfortunately there are
many more nutters who blast through residential streets at 70+ mph and weave
in and out of traffic at high speed leaving inches between cars and a few of
these loonies strap a camcorder to there handlebars to record it and stick
it on youtube.

so don't try to use a 900cc motorbike on roads with a 30mph limit!

writing from a cyclist's POV, most car drivers are borderline homicidal.

ER, why do people keep trying to redefine the law?
The law says that you must not use a hand-held phone. As long as the
phone is in a holder and you don't have to hold it, it is entirely
legal to press buttons on it.
If you were referring to having to press buttons on the headset,
that's irrelevant too. The headset / earpiece is not hand-held. You
wear it on your head. Pressing buttons is legal. Holding a phone is
not.
The law may or may not be daft, but at least it is clear.

The problem is called "They Say" syndrome. My grandmother had it and my wife
gets it sometimes....
They make up their own semi-logic based on what they read on the back of a

You see them, and I see them, when you`re in your own car. At one point I
spent well over 40 hours out patrolling with traffic police, and saw a grand
total of 3 people using their mobile phones. All 3 of them where done for
it though. Compare that 3 people in 40 hours to the 5 people I saw on a
single drive home one day! It`s just that people see the high-vis and drop
their phones.
As for people not wearing their seat-belt, a friend of mine was at a crash
where someone hadn`t worn their seatbelt, while carrying a baby on their
lap. To say it was an unpleasant experience for them having to see the mess
left behind would be a major understatement!

Check out (for example) the report by Strayer, Drews and Crouch of the
University of Utah - "A comparison of the Cellphone driver and the drunk
driver".

Check out (for example) the report by Strayer, Drews and Crouch of the
University of Utah - "A comparison of the Cellphone driver and the drunk
driver".
And you can claim to be as capable of driving while using your phone all you
want - the simple fact is that it distracts you from driving, making you a
more dangerous driver. If you disagree then please prove this and have the
law changed.

you could have watched the traffic show on bbc1 last night where a woman in
her 20s was absolutely squished by a lorry driver playing with his mobile -
it looked like something that would come out of a car crusher.

so what's your argument exactly? - that your driving skill is such that if
you drive with a mobile phone your skill is not impaired?

Driving skill is an individual thing, you simply cannot say *everyone* is
a more dangerous driver whilst doing a particular thing, be it using a
phone, eating a sandwich or whatever.
One person might be a risk to everyone within a 5 mile radius simply by
getting behind the wheel (although one hopes the driving test would weed
out the worst). Another person may very well be capable of driving at
70mph while both on the phone *and* eating a sandwich..! You simply cannot
reduce every single person to the lowest common denominator.
