    Hi there,

A friend has a Motorola v3i and needs to transfer the contacts to another
    similar Motorola model.

I said this would be easy (going from my Nokia experience). However, on
checking the Motorola software I can not find any software for the Motorola
in the same way Nokia has.

How does one go about achieving data backup? Can I use a standard USB cable?
Would my friend have had a cable come with the phone?

    Thanks in advance.

You need the Motorola Phone Tools. They aren't available as a download from
the motorola website. There should have been a CD when they purchased the
    phone

That's because itss not free. However, the CD that came with your mate's
V3i has all you need on it.

Yes, the V3i came with a cable and necessary software.

OK, thanks for the input. If it so happens that they do not have the CD or
cable that came with it, is it easy to obtain the them?

I was looking on the Motorola website and I noticed a backup thing for about
£2 per month. Seems a bit annoying really (and further convinced me to stick
with Nokia), but if there is no other option will this £2 per month service
allow them to back up contacts from one phone to another without too much
    grief.

    Thanks again.

If you just want to copy the numbers from one phone to another can you
not look at other options such as transferring them using IR or BT

www.mobyko.com offers a free backup service that allows you to sync your
contacts any time. Sign up with the code metro2 and you will get a free
    platinum account.

When you get a new phone, you just go in to your account, configure your
new phone and then sync it. At that point it gets all of your save
    details quickly and easily.

Have a scout round the site first, find out if your phones are supported.
