I've just received a text message from Orange saying "SIM Update" - what
does this actually mean? There are no options, etc so why waste my time
telling me something that I probably don't need to know!

It means what it says, usually it's to update the preferred roaming
list.
Just read it, delete it, then reboot your handset and forget.

It explains in the handbooks of every phone I've had on Orange - if you get
one of these, open the SMS, delete it, reboot the handset - thats all you
do.
