Looks to be a pretty smart piece of kit , the web browsing etc looks great ,
shame its 4gb or 8gb , would of like a 30gb but its flash memory and not
a harddrive ....not a bad thing , i guess these will be selling on Ebay for
some serious dosh , i bet it gives the blackberry / nokia a serious run for
there money , at say 399.99 off contract (sure it will be more) once the
dust has setteled and subject to many wow's from most of its users , i can't
see many reason why people wont swop , even its size is pretty good , looks
like apple really have a good chance at been the new mobile phone kings.

As it's currently a US only release (and with a 2 year contract), there
isn't a UK RRP for the iPhone. Once it's released into Europe then we
might have an idea, but based on Apple's previous prices, assume a 1.5x
divider on the US price ($300 = £200). Therefore the $500 price tag
becomes approx £330. I guess that excludes sales taxes too, so assume
close to £400 for the device if/when it comes to the UK.

And there's no way it'll give Blackberry a run for their money -
completely different markets. Blackberry tends to be a corporate device
for email etc - without a keyboard the iPhone didn't fit into this
market, especially considering the device cost.

You've got to remember the size of the markets. Majority of people do
not go for smartphone/PDA type devices. They're too expensive, too
functional and usually, too bulky. Compare the iPhone to the Razr, Slvr
etc and you'll see a significant size/thickness difference. The market
the iPhone is going into could be classed as niche - certainly isn't the
largest part. And you'll probably find that the smartphone/PDA market's
largest customers are businesses - and whatever the cool factor may be -
    a company's purchasing department aren't likely to pick a $500 iPhone
(basically a glorified mp3/video device) over a $200 phone with keyboard
    and syncs with Blackberry/Exchange.

The average phone user (> 50% of users?) will only:
    1.) Make calls
    2.) Send texts
    3.) Take pictures
    and possibly
4.) Send those pictures via MMS

The iPhone doesn't do MMS, so that's a limiting factor. See how popular
2G devices still are - things like 3G video calls haven't really taken
off. There's plenty of phones out there which can play MP3s, and there
are plenty of iPods out there already. I can't see a huge number (there
will be many though) who will ditch their £200 iPod and spend another
£400 on a phone to replace it.

It's going to sell - but I think it'll always be a niche device - just
look at the number of £30-£50 PAYG handsets are sold - cheap basic
handsets make up a significant part of the market.

And finally, don't forget the Apple have stated their device will never
be subsidised - therefore unlike the 'free' Nokia N95 and other devices
out there, it'll always appear a 'premium' device (which is what Apple
want). £0 for a N95 which can play mp3s, videos, surf web (over 3G and
Wifi), GPS built in etc - or £400 for a similar phone? I know which I'd
    pick.

One other small problem, AFAIU the iphone doesn't have a SIM card or a slot
to put one in. The only way it'll work in the UK is on an American AT&T
    contract roaming. This review...
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1182...oo_hs&ru=yahoo
....states that it can't use SIM cards, which would mean it cannot be used on
    any UK contract or PAYG.

I'd heard that but also heard that it did have a SIM slot - so wanted to
wait until it was properly released (6pm tonight US time isn't it?) to
see what the majority of people said about the SIM issue.

If this is the case, then it certainly stops them from being sold around
the world on eBay to be used with a local SIM.

if you think a 2 megapixel camera is cutting edge maybe - and if you think a
non 3g capable phone is worth buying over a 'free' 3g one.
plus if you think touch screens are better than real buttons with real
    tactile feedback.

    but....
    but....
the nokia doesnt have a pretty apple logo on it!
that must be worth at least £200 in itself.

A new 3G (European) version of the iPhone will be launched Monday in the UK
by Apple - in a join promotion with Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany, and
Carphone Warehouse. It should answer the disappointment with the US version
of the iPhone which has been widely slammed for its poor performance as a
    phone.

"Shipment date is still unknown, but "on course" for the year-end date
predicted last October by Apple CEO Steve Jobs."

Funny how these days the 'launch' is 6 months before shipment. In my
opinion, the launch is the day it becomes available, not the day that
    the marketing starts.

Re: Does anyone have the UK RRP for the new iphone?

the iPhone looks amazing, and it probably feels amazing in the palm of
your hand, too. It's sleek, curvy, shiny, and sexy, with on-screen icons
and buttons that just ooze and drip class.
