They're generally revenue generating numbers and cost more to call
than an 0870 number.
I suggest you review an updated copy of your T&C's to check what the
call charges are stated as.

Oh, yes it is!
Your comment is based on an outdated and obsolete definition of the
term "premium number". 0871 is charged at a premium (higher) rate
than ordinary numbers, therefore it's a "premium [rate] number".
Saying otherwise is in the same class of confusion-marketing as saying
that 0870 is "national rate" and 0845 is "local rate" whereas, in
fact, there ain't no such thing any more.

I'm on Orange PAYG and saw the 0871 charges on the Orange website a
while ago. I decided never to call 0871 from my mobile.

Any suggestions where to find a *FULL* list of charges for OVP-Virgin
customers, I would love to get details of 0844, 0871, 09, and some of the
newer 07 codes. All I can find is a pdf that says:
"national calls (0870, 0845) are charged at the standard call rate".
I tried emailing customer.services recently and got back a nonsense answer
asking for the exact full numbers I wished to call and they would see what
they could do for me - there must be a list that the billing system uses so
why
not send me a copy?

It might be 43 pence a minute for 0871 on OVP Virgin, not the same as
Virgin itself, but it would take you an hour or two of calls to both
to get this far

But 0871 isn't an 0870 number. Look for 'calling card' or 'premium'
rate ones.

I know! That's why I asked about a *FULL* pricelist - you had suggested
looking at T&Cs - the only such document for ovp-virgin refers to
standard rate (and prices) and then has the line I quoted I can find no
other pricing information - and as I said even an email to Orange was
of no real help.
Any suggestions as to exactly where to look? and yes I've tried Google
and extensive hunts on the Orange website.

I tried customer services to find out how much it would be to ring a 055
number and was told such numbers do not exist. Well, they do - all Abbey
branches have 055 numbers. From a BT land line, they are local calls, but
Orange insist they do not exist. I have made a call to one and will see how
much it is come bill time.

My BT Broadband Talk number is an 05 number too.

At least Orange broadband give you a 'local' number . MIne is 0151XXXXXXX so
people don't get ripped off when calling it.

I wasn't clear enough - Orange charge 35p a minute for *all* 0871 numbers -
even callthrough 0871 numbers that are charged by other operators at 10p a
minute (T-Mobile) or 15p a minute (Virgin).
There is no rationale related to the actual call cost to the operator for
Orange to do this.
