If I get a new contract with Three for 18 months (the £15 a month one would
do me fine), will the SIM work in my unlocked XDA?

This is wrong. No contract sims have ever been glued into phones by 3.
They do sometimes employ the practice in some of their cheaper PAYG phones
to prevent box breakers taking advantage of their good prices, throwing away
the sim and shipping the phones abroad to sell at a profit.

OP: no, the sim won't work in your XDA.

Thank you - is it only the XDA phone type it won't work in - what about a SE
    810 or something?

Neither the XDA or 810 are 3G phones, so, no, your '3' SIM won't work.

That depends which XDA. If it's one that supports UMTS 2100 it should work
    fine.
