I have active synch enabled and have configured my Orange SPV M700 to
connect to my exchange server to read and synch my emails.
This has been working fine, and I log in successfully. But, every hour
the smartphone prompts me for my password.

I can find the password prompt under settings...lock...where it asks for
my password to change settings and then gives me the option to change
the password. In the same window there is a ticked box which reads
"prompt if device unused" and 1 hour is selected but it doesn't allow
me to untick the box or change the 1 hour setting.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to resolve this?

In the mail account / exchange server setup you need to tick the box
which says "save password". I use activesync with exchange and mine
    doesn't do this.

It wont't, it is set on the Exchange server. Ask your administrator to
    alter the password enforcement settings.
