I can't recall Apple ever doing anything more gay than this.

I hope Steve Jobs arrogance hasn't caused Apple to shoot itself in the
    foot.

    Gay?

    What're you? 13?

That sentence really should end the thread right there. If your first
scapegoat for Apple doing something that you feel qualified to say is
wrong despite your almost total lack of hard information on the
decision-making process is Steve Jobs' arrogance, you've indicated that
you really don't want to hear any alternative views.

There's not much to discuss. People invalidated the warranty on a
consumer product and then an update from the vendor had a poor
interaction with it. The vendor warned ahead of time that this was
likely to happen. Anyone who didn't understand this possibility before
the warning is too stupid to use a phone, with or without an 'i' in
front of the name. You seem to have assumed that this is something that
Apple did with intent, but does it not occur to you that maybe there's
something fundamentally dangerous and fundamentally unsupportable about
sequential arbitrary changes to the lowest level operation systems of a
    complex device?

Yeah...why should they be allowed to create a phone that's restricted
    to one carrier?

It's called free enterprise, dummy. I won't buy one because it's tied
to the crappiest cell service available. But I'm also not going to
spend $400 for one, hack it, and then ***** when it doesn't work.

A clue is a terrible thing to waste.

It means to tamper with a phone and render it useless, beyond repair. So now
it is as useful as a brick. Obviously phones were bigger some years back and
had more of a resemblance to a brick, when the phrase was first coined.

    - Apple new the 1.1.1 update would brick unlocked iPhones
    - They could have EASILY coded iTunes to CHECK to see if the firmware
had been altered (and if so, not continue with the update)

The Owner of the iphone could have EASILY decided not to alter his firmware
    in the 1st intance

Why would Apple want to do that? When the owner activated his iPhone, he
agreed to the terms of the license.

If said owner was stupid enough not to read the terms and conditions before
agreeing to them then they deserve everything they get.

Just because you sign up online, it doesn't make the Ts&Cs any less binding
or important to check than if one was signing a contract in a shop

people who cracked their phones are mostly reported damaged now. and you
say AT&T 's services are crappy or Apple? maybe you want to use it to
    comment on it?

why are they restricting the phone to one carrier? you should probably
check on BRANDING STRATEGIES and you will understand this

An iPhone would make a lousy brick. Bricks are a standard size and
shaped in such a way as to accomodate mortar. You just try building a
house using iPhones. It'd look nice and shiny, but structurally, you'd
be asking for trouble! It's crazy I tell thee!

Well, if you were stupid enough to buy an iPhone, you'd probably be stupid
enough to try and build a house out of them.
