3 have some £12 and £15 pm tariffs,
and the 3 network is now what it should have been
IMHO 3 are the new Orange
i.e. "Innovative"
Now if 3 could only be persuaded to offer Line2,
and at a reduced rate ;-)

Just been looking at the Three site....
You'd probably know the answer to this.
If you're out of range of a Three cell and roaming on Orange, do you
still get data access?

Yes, but at much slower 2G rate of maybe 40kbs which is about 10 times
slower,
and maybe 50 times slower than a 3 cell with new 3.5G HSDPA added.

If you press the "Planet 3" button (ie. Threes mobile homepage) you get a
message saying "You are outside the video service area", and get reduced
options. however if you point your phones browser to a normal www. website,
it works...

Hmmm, so you don't get to roam on the Orange 3G network, then?
That doesn't sound a lot better than Web & Walk Plus to me.

Nope but 3 have done a deal with T Mobile to roam each others 3G

T Mobile web and walk is a better deal for those who want big downloads
3's deal is cheaper for moderate data users
i.e emails and web browsing

Orange only provide the 3G backup coverage, not 2G. The 2G backup is
still provided by O2 AFAIK.

At home I've got no 3G coverage and no o2 coverage so it used to be a
real pain but since they swapped to roaming with Orange I have
excellent 2G.

"I want the moon on a stick"
Having a rummage around the networks on www.mobileshop.com might be
helpful.
www.e2save.com or www.carphonewarehouse.com also list similar stuff.
Have fun.

Don't know if they're still doing it, but if you already have another
service from Virgin Media (landline, broadband or TV) you could add a mobile
contract for a tenner a month. It's occasionally 300mins/300texts per
month, but often drops back down to 100/100. Don't know the term, but I
think it just goes with the timing of your existing VM service contract.
Otherwise you could try looking at one of the pseudo-contracts on PAYG. This
is where you topup more than XX pounds per month and get cheaper
calls/inclusive texts/etc etc. You usually don't get any free mins, but
your XX pounds can be used to pay for the calls/texts etc. This might work
out better than a XX pound a month contract, especially if you call
non-inclusive numbers (0845 etc). I haven't been paying attention to what
all the networks offer, but I think Tesco Extra is one.

O2 used to provide 2G roaming for 3, but 3 moved new customers
over to Orange and have now moved all the old ones as well.
(except for a handful of exceptions which can't get Orange 2G)
3 have just done a deal with T Mobile to roam 3G
on each others networks.
So has Orange and Vodafone, leaving O2 out in the cold

Of course there is, 3 will give a choice of phones like a 6120 with
mix&match 300 mins/text, and 300 on net mins + free Skype,
and free voicemail, for £15 a month
Personally I would go for the Nokia 6120 as it is 3 Skype
compatible, and has HSDPA data which I would use connected to my laptop
Check out any 3 shop or a CPW, I would go for the 3 deal at a CPW
as there's chance CPW might supply the phone as GSM stock and unlocked

The OP specifically asks for 12 months duration, not 18
